Job Description

The Lilongwe Water Board is a Statutory Corporation established in 1947 and re-constituted in 1995 under the Water Works Act (Cap 72). It is responsible for the provision of water supply services to the City of Lilongwe and other surrounding areas designated as its supply area.

The Board is inviting applications from suitably qualified candidates of Malawi origin to fill the following permanent position.

Position: WATER QUALITY OFFICER

Reporting to the Senior Water Quality and Environmental Officer, the Water Quality Officer shall be responsible for the following:

Key Duties and Responsibilities

•  Implementing Water Quality strategies, programs and budgets;
•  Conducting water quality tests at different stages of the treatment process and consumption points to ensure compliance to water standards;
•  Conducting water quality risk assessments, evaluation and propose improvements to water supply systems;
•  Monitoring and evaluating water treatment efficiency in various stages of water purification in order to recommend process improvements;
•  Responding to queries related to water quality control and environment referred to him/her;
•  Visit sites of concern, such as potential sources of pollution or contamination, and sources of complaints about drinking water quality;
•  Carrying out water quality assessments prior to development of new raw water sources;
•  Implementing and monitoring environmental and social safeguards for LWB projects
•  Carrying out research and development on new water treatment chemicals;
•  Conducting research in water processing activities as well as changes in raw water quality and provide solutions for improvement in water treatment process;
•  Carrying out reviews of Environmental and Social studies reports submitted by Consultants;
•  Providing guidance to laboratory staff and expertise to ensure efficient and acceptable water analytical services are attained;
•  Carrying out appraisal of catchment area and water systems;
•  Supervising and appraising staff under his/her charge;
•  Demonstrating outstanding commitment to service delivery programs of the Board by personally identifying and reporting water bursts/leakages to customer care Division of which verifiable repair records shall be used during performance appraisal as one of the components to be assessed for time.
