Job Description


The Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome (MLW) Programme ( ) is an internationally recognized centre for research and research training, funded by the Welcome Trust In collaboration with the University of Malawi, College of Medicine (COM), MLW would like to engage the services of a competent and dynamic individual to work in an exciting Research Programme at the MLW Research facility as it is expanding.

Position: Transcriber/Translator -1 post, based in Blantyre (initial 2 year contract)

Job Summary

The appointee will be expected to undertake qualitative data transcription and translation. They will be part of MLW’s transcription and translation team, under the supervision of the Senior Translation and Transcription Coordinator. The selected candidate will be fluent in English, Chichewa and any additional language spoken in Malawi and will have proven previous experience in transcription and translation, preferably in a health research context_ Additionally s/he will be fully conversant with Microsoft windows packages, possess accurate typing abilities and be able to establish and maintain both electronic and hard copy filing management systems.

Main Responsibilities

  • Transcription of recorded in depth interviews and focus group discussions from audio to written electronic copies.
  • Ensuring that the transcribed content matches with the recorded version
  • Accurate translation of data from Chichewa to English.
  • Ensuring quality control in translation and transcription.
  • Maintaining confidentiality of all data
  • Ensuring that transcribed and translated documents are saved appropriately with the right file names and in the right locations.
  • Timely completion of transcription and translation that meets deadlines.
  • Follow MLW’s Standards Operating Procedures (SOPs) for transcription and translation.
  • Participating in capacity development activities such as occasional back translation of translated work for quality checking.


  • Diploma or Degree in Journalism or Linguistics/ICT will be an advantage but not a pre-requisite.
  • Secretarial Studies
  • At least 2 years’ experience in transcription/translation services from Chichewa to English
  • Good knowledge and ability to use computer packages (especially Microsoft Word).
  • Experience in a health-related or social science related research environment
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal)
