Job Description

The UNC Project-Malawi (UNCP-M) Training Program Coordinator works under the direction of the Director of the UNCP-M Training Program Central Office. The position requires the capacity to independently manage the activities of students, fellows and investigators at UNCP-M and the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) who are associated with specific formal academic/research-oriented training programs. Focus areas of training programs include infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, mental health, implementation science, and trauma and injury prevention research.


Specific duties/responsibilities

  • Oversight of the Central Office training budget and schedule, weekly activities, and annual in-person advisory meetings.
  • Coordinate with the UNCP-M administrative core, KUHeS Research Support Center and participating Departments, and the UNC Institute for Global Health & Infectious Diseases training program and finance teams.
  • Serve as a key contact and liaison for trainees, faculty and affiliates from the U.S. preparing to work in Malawi.
  • Work alongside the UNCP-M finance team in order to maintain adherence to internal and external finance tracking processes.
  • Work with project staff at the National Institute of Health and health education professionals located throughout Southern Africa.


Primary Functions

Record Keeping (20%)

  • Track all trainees funded by specific training programs, training activities at UNCP-M, and research infrastructure development.
  • Use tracking tools specific to UNC and the NIH.
  • Review and verify data and materials.


Dissemination (15%)

  • Participate in manuscript and presentation preparation.
  • Closely monitor internal, government, and university policy changes regarding foreign trainees and disseminate information to department chairs, investigators, and staff.


Program Management (45%)

  • Oversight of weekly/monthly training activities and annual in-person advisory meetings.
  • Work directly with students and fellows at UNCP-M and KUHeS who are enrolled in degree programs or conducting research on site.
  • Participate in preparing grants and progress reports to the NIH.
  • Assist with budget planning and financial activities.


Program Liaison (20%)

  • Manage orientation planning for visiting trainees; acclimating new trainees in Malawi.
  • Assist trainees in meeting internal, government, and university requirements.
  • Provide support to health science students who wish to continue their training abroad.
  • Undertake communications with potential trainees.
  • Engage in recruitment activities with representatives from area schools of medicine, nursing and public health, and hospitals.


Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor of Education Degree (Sciences), and a Master’s Degree in Public Health/Global Health.
  • Minimum of three years’ experience coordinating trainings.
  • Experience working in a health management institution.
