Technical Advisor – Communications and Knowledge Management

Job Description


The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) commissioned GIZ to implement the Social Protection Programme (SPP) and Food and Nutrition Security Programme (FNSP) in Malawi. SPP seeks to support the Government of Malawi to strengthen the coordination and implementation of the Malawi National Social Support Programme II (MNSSP II). MNSSP II is the overarching framework for the implementation of the national social protection policy. It has 5 pillars including consumption support, resilient livelihoods and shock sensitive social protection, systems strengthening and linkages. GIZ is working closely with the Poverty Reduction and Social Protection Division (PRSP) in the Ministry of Economic Planning and Development and Public Sector Reforms. The country package Malawi, of the global Food and Nutrition Security Programme (FNSP) aims at improving the nutrition situation and resilience to food crises of women and children under two in the districts of Dedza and Salima. Key indicators of the programme are to improve dietary diversity of women and minimum acceptable diet of children, but also to improve the food security situation of households in the target communities.

To successfully implement the SPP and FNSP programmes, GIZ is looking to recruit a Technical Advisor – Communications and Knowledge Management

Position: Technical Advisor – Communications and Knowledge Management

A. Responsibilities

Reporting to the Team leader, the Technical advisor – Communications and knowledge management is responsible for:

  • Providing strategic and technical support on all SPP and FNSP internal and external communication plans
  • Coordinate with media to support events, documentation of workshops, events and other activities
  • Providing strategic and technical support in Knowledge management

B. Tasks

Provide support to GIZ SPP and FNSP communication on:

  • Development of a communication strategy for GIZ SPP and FNSP programmes.
  • Contribution to the communication strategy of the Global Programme based in Germany
  • Conception of different communication formats, appropriate to positioning of GIZ on different levels
  • Development of a newsletter on Social Protection and Nutrition Security
  • Development of quarterly success stories and other contributions to the media
  • Support with the procurement of services relevant for communication (e.g. photographers, lay outers, graphic designers etc.)
  • Support to SPP and FNSP event management preparation and rollout

Knowledge management:

  • Follow up on issues brought up during field monitoring visits or through reporting and collect lessons learned, best practices, case studies, photos in specific areas and document them for donor reports.
  • Provide support in tracking the Capacity Development evaluation forms and analysis of the reports
  • Provide support to technical staff to enhance quality assurance on evaluation forms and follow up on gaps in the data or incomplete information in the forms.
  • Support the dissemination of knowledge products and evidence of successful interventions in Malawi as well as in GIZ and the wider nutrition/social protection community
  • Maintenance of filing and information management systems (i.e. in DMS, MS Teams)
  • Any other communication support required for GIZ SPP and FNSP programmes.
  • The officer will perform other duties and tasks at the request of the team leaders.

C. Qualifications and experience


  • University Degree in Communication Studies, Development Studies, Social Sciences, or related field.

Professional experience

  • At least three years’ professional experience in the field of knowledge management and or communications
  • Relevant work experience in social development programmes and international development cooperation
  • Ability to work effectively in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Strong communication and facilitation skills in English and Chichewa.

D. Working conditions

The position is based in Lilongwe with frequent travel to GIZ SPP and FNSP programme districts.
