Based in: Lilongwe/Blantyre, Malawi

Project Description: World Education, Inc. seeks candidates for a Teacher Training and Coaching Specialist for the anticipated USAID-funded Early Grade Reading (EGR) project in Malawi. The project aims to improve early grade reading outcomes in primary schools nationwide, building upon USAID’s current investments in Malawi’s National Reading Program.

Position Description: The Teacher Training and Coaching Specialist will ensure the development and maintenance of robust teacher training and coaching systems and processes. As the first point of contact for queries related to teacher training and coaching responsibilities, s/he will design and plan in-service teacher training interventions, support continuous teacher professional development and coaching, and develop supporting materials. S/he will provide leadership to identify and implement initiatives to improve instructional techniques among teachers, and achieve student learning outcomes. The Teacher Training and Coaching Specialist will facilitate capacity building and help assist partners to develop and embed highly effective teaching and coaching, curriculum development, adaptation, feedback, and assessment practices to improve student learning outcomes consistent with the Project’s Framework. 


  • Lead the development and implementation of a teacher professional development strategy for school-based education programs;
  • Provide support to the development of teaching and learning material for Early Childhood Development and Early Grade Literacy;
  • Establish and implement a mechanism for selection and intake of teachers, defining clear benchmarks, skills, knowledge assessments, and safe vetting protocols;
  • Work in partnership with all concerned formal and non-formal education stakeholders (MIE, MOEST, TTCs, school councils, PEAs, etc.);
  • Develop and implement a cascade training approach including quality assurance practices on all levels;
  • Establish and implement a supervision and coaching mechanism on National and regional levels that include practical and adaptive tools for coaching;
  • Provide technical support in the development of training approaches, distance training, and development of training guides;
  • Develop strategies to ensure gender equity and inclusion among groups of teacher trainers and community-based teachers;
  • Establish and implement protocols for classroom observation of teachers, and structured coaching using evidence-based approaches to help teachers improve instruction;
  • Assist in research to monitor and incorporate feedback into an innovative program design.


  • Advanced degree (Masters/Ph.D.) in Education or other related fields;
  • At least 5 years of proven experience in technical areas related to literacy, primary or early childhood education, and/or teacher professional development;
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience working with international development or humanitarian organization;
  • Demonstrated experience in managing and capacity building of diverse teams;
  • Ability to work as part of a team with in-country staff and external consultants;
  • Deep understanding of the socio-emotional and educational challenges in resource-constrained communities in developing countries;
  • Experience working with USAID or other international donor guidelines and reporting mechanisms;
  • Knowledge and or experience working in various regions of Malawi;
  • Professionally proficient in written and spoken English (ILR 3+) required; Knowledge of Chichewa or other Malawian local languages is an advantage.
