Job Location: Lilongwe, with travel to Blantyre and field sites (approx. 20%)

Salary rage (depending on experience): MWK 1,364,365.35 – 1,658,394.61


GOAL has been working in southern Malawi since 2002 and currently has a presence in three districts (Nsanje, Chikwawa and Machinga). GOAL’s global objective is to promote resilient well-being by: helping people to survive crisis; promoting optimal and resilient health; promoting food and nutrition security, and; supporting people to have sustainable livelihoods. GOAL maintains close working relationships with district authorities and relevant line ministries.

Description of the Role:

The Strategic Partnerships Coordinator is one of GOAL Malawi’s senior-most staff, responsible for developing strategic relationships, spearheading new business development, and increasing the visibility of GOAL Malawi at the national level. As one of only two positions based in Lilongwe (the GOAL Malawi Head Office is located in Blantyre), the position requires a high level of initiative and self-management, and significant capacity for independent working.

The position is remotely managed by the Country Director.

Key Duties:

Development and maintenance of key strategic partnerships:

  • Identification of external stakeholders (including key government agencies, donors, potential consortium partners, coordination and technical fora, and private sector actors) of relevance to GOAL at national level;
  • Development and maintenance of organizational relationship with identified strategic stakeholders, including the facilitation of regular face-to-face meetings, establishment of strong communication channels, and support for other GOAL Malawi staff (management, technical, programmatic) to increase engagement with these stakeholders;
  • Support for GOAL global efforts to strengthen regional/international partnerships.

Spearhead new business development:
  • Regular updating/refinement of GOAL Malawi’s funding strategy to reflect donor intelligence, trends and opportunities identified through engagement;
  • Development and maintenance of a database of donor contacts, and coordination of contact with donors across GOAL Malawi;
  • Tracking of GOAL Malawi’s funding strategy implementation and broader donor engagement;
  • Continuous identification of new funding opportunities (including monitoring of donor-solicited funding opportunities through websites, newspapers and other media);
  • Coordination of proposal development and budgeting processes, ensuring timely submissions (including researching/writing/editing quality narrative proposals as and when required);
  • Support for efforts that build the capacity of the wider GOAL Malawi team to engage in resource mobilisation and strategic partnership development;
  • Coordination with in country and HQ technical coordinators in new business development efforts

Increasing visibility of GOAL at national level:
  • Ensure GOAL is represented in all relevant technical and coordination meetings at national level;
  • Directly represent GOAL in interactions with external stakeholders (e.g. donors, UN, peer agencies and national government officials) as required;
  • Facilitate reporting and/or regular communication with national level stakeholders;
  • Support field visits by donors, Government agencies and other external stakeholders as required;
  • Contribute to the development of GOAL Malawi’s national policy/advocacy agenda.

  • Functionally and operationally manage GOAL Malawi’s Lilongwe liaison office;
  • Line manage a GOAL driver based out of Lilongwe;
  • Ensure all relevant GOAL and donor protocols and practices are understood and complied with, including specifically policies on fraud, whistle-blowing and zero tolerance towards corruption.
  • Routine internal reporting, including weekly updates;
  • Liaison with GOAL HQ staff;
  • Actively contribute to all GOAL Malawi strategic planning processes.

  • At least 10-12 years’ work experience in humanitarian or development programming, with 3-5 years at senior management level;
  • Bachelors (or preferably Masters) degree in social sciences, business, public administration or a related field;
  • Professional qualifications in relevant subject;
  • Experience in strategy development, programme design and resource mobilization;
  • Familiarity with the requirements of major institutional donors, including Irish Aid, DFID, USAID and the EC.
  • Excellent interpersonal, motivational and management skills;
  • Exceptional strategic thinking, analysis and English language communications skills;
  • History of working effectively and respectfully with external actors, including local authorities, NGOs and civil society actors;
  • Solid administrative experience including office management systems;
  • Honesty, encourages openness and transparency; demonstrates highest levels of integrity
