Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) is an international Catholic organization with a mission to accompany, serve and defend the rights of refugees and forcibly displaced people.

Founded in 1980 by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) under the leadership of Fr Pedro Arrupe SJ, JRS is now at work in over 56 countries.

JRS in Malawi is looking for a highly motivated and qualified candidates to fill the following positions tenable in Dzaleka Dowa:


Reports to Secondary School Head Teacher.


  • Assessing students' abilities and limitations with regard to intellectual, physical, social and emotional impairments, exceptional intellectual gifts, or other special situations
  • Designing or modifying curricula and preparing and delivering programmes, lessons and activities adapted to students’ abilities and needs
  • Employing special educational strategies and techniques during instruction to improve the development of sensory- and perceptual-motor skills, language, cognition, and memory
  • Establishing and enforcing rules for behaviour and policies and procedures to maintain order among students
  • Teaching academic subjects, and practical and self-help skills to students with hearing, sight and other impairments
  • Conferring with other staff members to plan and schedule lessons for special needs students
  • Preparing and maintaining student data and other records and submitting reports
  • Administering various forms of assessment and evaluating progress of each student
  • Conferring with students, parents, head teachers and other relevant professionals involved in the students’ care to develop individual educational plans (IEPs) designed to promote students' development
  • Implement IEPs, assess students’ performance, track their progress and provide appropriate feedback
  • Update IEPs throughout the school year to reflect students’ progress and goals
  • Discuss student’s progress with parents, teachers, counsellors, and administrators
  • Train and guide other teachers in identifying and working with students with special education needs
  • Prepare and help students transition from class to class and after graduation
  • Assist in normal teaching duties assigned from time to time as a member of the secondary school team participating all school related meetings and training
  • Providing accurate data and reports as per agreement with line manager.

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Education from a recognised institution
  • Certificate or higher qualification in Special Needs Education (LD, VI and/or HI)
  • More than 2 years’ experience working with learners with special educational needs
  • Retired teachers will have an added advantage.

  • Compassion and patience are a must
  • Should have an intuitive and calming nature
  • Creativity and adaptability
  • Should be organised and detail oriented.
