Job Description

Médecins Sans Frontières, (MSF) is an international independent medical humanitarian organization working together with the Ministry of Health in Chiradzulu district on a HIV/TB program. MSF-FRANCE is recruiting suitable candidates for the position of:

Position: Social Worker


The HIV/TB project of MSF France in Chiradzulu is looking for a Social Worker to join the HIV/TB Patient Support Team (comprising of 10 counsellors, 2 social workers and 2 mental health nurses). This team provides a range of services to people living with HIV, including HIV counselling and education, mental health and psycho-social support. In order to enhance the patients’ psycho-social and clinical outcomes, the social worker addresses the social needs of vulnerable cases by conducting home-visits, tracing patients who require follow-up, collaborating with the Patient Support and the Medical Teams during the Comprehensive Teen Clubs and Intensive Clinic Days hosted by the 11 health facilities of Chiradzulu District, including the DHO and Saint-Joseph’s Mission Hospital.

General Duties

  • Provide intake, assessment, orientation, support, referral and advocacy services by assessing and evaluating individualized social needs as per a patient-centered case management approach;
  • Identify and respond to the psychosocial and social needs of most vulnerable patients through psychosocial and social assessments, support, referrals and follow-up in collaboration with MSF teams, partners (MOH, MoGCDSW, MOES&T, Malawi Against Disabilities, …) and stakeholders, building on ongoing efforts;
  • Manage a pool of social support beneficiaries in collaboration with the SSAS (Social Support Activity Supervisor) and the rest of the team; participate in activities’ monitoring and evaluation with the support of EPI;
  • Liaise with relevant partners and stakeholders according to the patient’s multi-sectoral needs: health facilities, local authorities, governmental social services, NGOs in order to improve the social services scope and responsiveness in collaboration with the SSAS (Social Support Activity Supervisor) and the PSAM (Patient Support Activity Manager); map and regularly update a database of relevant partners and stakeholders;
  • Establish and maintain contacts with Village Chiefs, Ministry of Health and Social Welfare staff, Community-based groups and Volunteers participating in HIV activities;
  • Respond to tracing requests from the Medical team and use local contacts to find patients;
  • Other duties as assigned depending on the evolution of social support activities.

Contract Details
  • Six-month contract renewable, including six weeks’ probation period
  • Intended start date: End of February 2020
  • Working hours: 07:30-16:30 Tuesday to Saturday. Schedule determined by Administration; occasionally on Mondays, Sundays and public holidays as flexibility is required.

Required work experience
  • 2 or more years’ experience as social worker or similar position
  • Work experience with vulnerable persons living with HIV, including children and adolescents
  • Preferably work experience with MSF or another international NGO

Skills & Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in social work, social welfare, child protection, psycho-social support
  • Fluent in Chichewa and English
  • Strong computer skills (Word, Excel, Outlook in particular)
  • Team player, flexibility, able to cope with difficult social contexts, well-organized, proactive, problem-solving skills
  • Committed to MSF principles and code of conduct
