Job Description

The International Training and Education Center for Health (I-TECH) is a center in the University of Washington’s Department of Global Health that works in partnership with the University of California, San Francisco. I-TECH has projects in more than 20 countries, and its worldwide staff work with local ministries of health, universities, non-governmental organizations, medical facilities, and other partners to support efficient, well-ordered health care systems that provide high quality care to all citizens.  I-TECH Malawi provides technical assistance to the Malawi Ministry of Health and its partners to support human resource development, health systems strengthening, HIV care and treatment, and HIV surveillance for epidemic control.

I-TECH has been privileged to provide technical support to the Government of Malawi Ministry of Health (MoH), since 2008, through seconded senior Technical Assistants, Program Officers and Public Health Fellows.  The International Training and Education Center for Health (I-TECH) was established in 2002 at the University of Washington in Seattle.  I-TECH is funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Division of Global HIV and TB (CDC-DGHT) under the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

I-TECH Malawi will be conducting an observational birth defects surveillance study (BDS) in four hospitals: Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre, Bwaila Hospital in Lilongwe, Ntcheu District Hospital and Mangochi District Hospital. The purpose of this Birth Defects Surveillance Study (BDSS) project is to first implement a birth defects surveillance system and estimate prevalence of birth defects and secondly to conduct a nested case-control study to examine the association of maternal use of antiretroviral treatment (ART) and birth defects in the four hospitals.   Results from this study will provide background rates of birth defects in Malawi and provide baseline estimates of maternal medication use to treat HIV/AIDS in pregnancy and the prevalence of major external birth defects.

I-TECH is seeking to hire qualified candidates for the following positions to support the activity

Position: SITE NURSE MANAGER (4 posts)

Position Overview

The Site Nurse Manager, to be based at each study site, will provide the overall co-ordination and supervision of research nurses/midwives involved in the study. (S)he will oversee the day-to-day operation of the study to ensure compliance with study protocol and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).

(S)he will work closely with site research team to trouble-shoot any implementation issues at the study sites. The Site Nurse Manager will also be responsible for administrative duties (shift assignment, leave, training etc) of the site research nurses in consultation with Research Nurse Manager. This position will report directly to the Research Nurse Coordinator based at I-TECH in Lilongwe.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • To oversee the day-to-day operational research activities at the hospital sites.
  • To provide overall coordination and supervision of the surveillance nurses/midwives and research assistants
  • Conduct QCs on Case Report Forms and source documents to ensure accurate data recording.
  • Support in responding to data queries from Data Manager and ICBDSR
  • To liaise with Research Nurse Coordinator/supervisors and ensure the implementation of BDS study activities at the hospital sites as per the study protocol.
  • To work closely with Research Nurses and Research Assistants to trouble-shoot any implementation issues at the study sites
  • To ensure improvement of counseling services for study participants and linking/referring all babies born with defects to available care and support.
  • To assist in improving current clinical care of babies with Birth Defects
  • To participate in recruitment of Birth Defects study staff
  • To perform administrative roles (shift assignment, leave, training etc.) of the research nurses/midwives
  • To perform other duties as required.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • At least a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing/Midwifery
  • Evidence of registration with the Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi
  • Previous experience in a research study involving human subjects
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience of supervising surveillance nurses/midwives
  • Previous knowledge and experience in birth defects will be an added advantage

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines whilst working on tight schedule.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
