Job Description

The Malawi Legal Aid Bureau, established under Section 3 of the Legal Act of 2010, is a national public institution mandated to provide legal aid to persons with insufficient means. The scope of the mandate of the Legal Aid Bureau consists of four main tenets, namely legal advice; legal assistance; representation in any court, tribunal or similar body or authority; and provision of legal education and information.

In a bid to effectively and efficiently deliver its mandate and reach out to as many Malawians as possible, the Bureau invites applications from well qualified candidates to fill the following vacant positions:

Job Title : Senior Assistant Accountant

Grade : J

Reporting to : Principal Accountant

Location : Zomba


Is responsible for bookkeeping, including maintaining organisation’s financial records, monthly billing, and reports for review by management. This includes, but is not limited to: accounts receivable and payable, EOM reconciliation, payroll, payroll taxes, invoicing, personnel payroll records, weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly business reports, computer data entry of insurance records and other items as needed by management.


  • Manage bookkeeping including all month and year end journal entries.
  • Compile and prepare monthly, quarterly and yearly financial statements for decision making.
  • Prepare all monthly client invoicing and vendor payments for management team approval and mailing.
  • Keep records and track of all company assets purchased and in use.
  • Update records when assets are removed and no longer in use.
  • Prepare weekly, monthly, quarterly reports and financial analysis reports including but not limited to financial statements,
  • Provide advice and assistance in making decisions in the areas of finances, analysis, financial software and accounting as requested by management.
  • Monitor balances on bank accounts.
  • Prepare and submit bank transfer instructions.
  • Authorize payment vouchers.
  • Appraise and supervise staff in Main Accounts.
  • Review period bank reconciliations.
  • Carry out any other function as assigned by management from time to time


Minimum Academic, Professional Qualifications and Work Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in General Accounting, Finance or Applied Accounting, Auditing and Information Systems from a recognized institution.
  • 2+ years’ experience in accounting or related field
  • Working knowledge in computer packages.
  • Be affiliated with a Professional Body of Accountants

  • Demonstrate the ability to work with numbers and understand a broad range of common financial matters in a timely manner.
  • Possess computer skills, including a working knowledge of common software programs.
  • Be willing to do what it takes to get the job done in a timely manner.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Have strong organizational and analytical skills
  • Be willingness to establish and maintain effective working relationships
