1. JOB SUMMARY

Beyond Water is a social impact business established to sell low cost household and irrigation pumps in Malawi, through a variety of channels.

2. SCOPE OF ROLE

The post of Sales and Marketing Manager requires a candidate with excellent sales and marketing experience (demonstrated by results) who is not afraid to ‘get their hands dirty’. It is a position which requires a strategic and entrepreneurial approach. We are more interested in what you have and what you can achieve. Not how long your CV is.

You may have direct experience of both sales and marketing or just one of the two, but your appetite to learn and earn means you can develop quickly. You’ll need to know how to motivate people as well as supervise and able to use your skills and experience to influence, network and nurture public and private sector partnerships.


3. MAIN DUTIES

Reporting to the Managing Director and working in close collaboration with colleagues and partners you will manage a District and field sales teams and be responsible for the expansion of Beyond Water’s sales and marketing operations across Malawi.


4. SALES AND MARKETING

  • Develop and implement an impactful sales and marketing strategy for the geographic and product expansion of Beyond Water


Lead District level marketing and sales campaigns in existing Districts and scope the potential for expansion into new Districts by:

  • Holding meetings with District level stakeholders (public, private and community-based institutions) to promote Beyond Water’s products and approach
  • Overseeing the design, production of written and digital marketing materials (brochures, technical specifications, customer testimonials) and facilitating their distribution
  • Developing and commissioning advertising (using traditional media, social media and any other media deemed appropriate)


Maximise Beyond Water’s direct product sales by:

  • Proposing the most appropriate sales structure for each District and recruiting and leading the resulting District sales teams
  • Specifying the most appropriate and successful methods for achieving sales in any given District and identifying and addressing any obstacles thereto
  • Advising on sales prices, promotional prices, incentive payments for customer referrals and
    commission rates for sales staff and agents
  • Developing and implementing a strategy for ‘institutional’ or bulk sales to be delivered with the Managing Director and other appropriate members of the team
  • Undertaking demonstrations, meetings and identifying other marketing/networking opportunities with institutions, NGOs and private sector operators
  • Leading a team in forecasting sales and advise sales team on the sales plan


Maximise Beyond Water’s indirect/wholesale product sales by:

  • Building relationships with promoters of irrigation for small-scale farmers (NGOs, Government departments farmers, farmers, groups, cooperatives, unions and local funds)
  • Developing a wholesale customer base amongst Agri dealers and identifying ways in which the wholesale market can be used to expand Beyond Water’s products into Districts where it is presently unrepresented


Build a wider market for Beyond Water’s products by:

  • Assessing and exploiting other opportunities for sales growth, including telephone sales
    ordering and other digital and social media channels
  • Using Pump Aid’s project activities to facilitate linkages between businesses and government to promote a greater awareness of Beyond Water’s products can do


5. MANAGEMENT AND MONITORING


Ensure the end to end delivery of an effective sales operation from initial contact, through order, delivery and installation to final debt collection by:

  • Setting sales and debt recovery targets and driving the performance of the team
  • Establishing, with the SMT, appropriate performance targets for the teams involved in production, delivery and installation
  • Supporting and mentoring the sales team, delivering training programs, improving salesmanship
    and conducting regular appraisals and assessments


Maximise the use and usefulness of customer data by:

  • Monitoring data collection and analysis to ensure that all sales are appropriately processed and every aspect of the customer’s experience is tracked and assessed
  • Using data gathering tools like ‘Know Your Customer’ to identify the characteristics of those most likely to buy and use these to target sales activities
  • Establish customer tracking and follow up systems that record the locations and performance of all pumps sold, that detail the seller, installer and manufacturer of the respective pump and any customer issues arising from same.


6. OTHER TASKS

  • Approve all expenses incurred by the sales team and ensure all sales activities are delivered within the agreed financial budget
  • Ensure that all Beyond Water’s administrative processes and procedures are complied with
    including, but not limited, to Pump Aid’s safeguarding policies in respect to contact with communities and stakeholders and the appropriate addressing of any safeguarding issues that may arise
  • Attendance at management meetings, providing written reports when requested and any other duties in pursuit of performance
    and efficiency.


7. CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS

  • Impressive sales and marketing record
  • Exceptional communicator both verbally and in writing, able to adapt to different cultures and communication styles
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and productive working relationship with colleagues from varying functions, organizations and positions
  • Highest level of professionalism, integrity, respect for others, and a commitment to “doing the right thing”.
  • Flexibility and adaptability in managing and prioritizing a high workload in a fast-paced environment; ability to work in emotionally stressful context.
