Job Description

Background and Purpose

Welthungerhilfe is one of the largest German non-governmental organisations in the areas of development co-operation and emergency relief. Primarily in co-operation with local partner organisations, its task is to contribute to improvement in the nutritional and income base for the low-income populations in Afnca, Asia and Latin America. Welthungerhilfe has been implementing projects in Malawi continuously since 2013. Sector focus is on WASH, Food and Nutrition Security, Livelihoods and when necessary, Emergency response

WHH Malawi is looking for a project specialist with experience in advocacy in food and nutrition security to implement the Malawi component of a Multi-County Program funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation end Development (BMZ). The successful candidate will work closely with two WHH partners that are implementing the project in Mangochi District and on national level The Multi-Country Program “Strengthening Rural Governance for the Right to Adequate Food’ implemented in 4 countries Malawi, Kenya, Bukina Faso and India.

The position is based in Lilongwe. Duty trips to the project area in Mangochi as well as trips to other program countries and globe! conferences are required

The position is to be filled as soon as possible with an initial contract period of one year, with a possibility of extension


LOCATION- Lilongwe

START DATE – 1 July 2020

Tasks and responsibilities of the position:

  • Closely collaborate with the Partner Project Coordinators and support the implementation of project activities at national and local level meetings, awareness raising and communication, trainings, studies, South-South exchange. etc.)
  • Identify capacity building needs of partner organisations) regarding advocacy and other topics to ensure high quality implementation and strengthening of partner for policy influencing
  • Coordinate capacity building and other activities at national level (e.g. developing national advocacy strategy) with support of CSA
  • Guide and asst the partner organization to adhere to WHH and Donor standards and operating procedures (in close collaboration with WHH MEAL and Finance Officers)
  • Promote the leadership of partner organization(s) in policy dialogue with the local/regional/national governments: represent the project vis-a-vis international organizations, donor organizations and, if only required, national governments, and other actors to build professional relationships with them, use the influence of Welthungertuile in the program countries to create a positive environment for civil society participation
  • Monitor project-relevant policy developments at national level and timely share corresponding information with the county team (WHH – Partners) and the international program coordination

  • Strengthen, support and actively participate in knowledge sharing and policy learning networks with relevant actors at national and district level
  • Contribute to identifying opportunities for feeding information and evidence generated during the implementation of the project into policy processes
  • Promote and contribute to effective communication and coordination at country level (with partner organization(s) and other relevant actors) and between county level, overall coordination team and other countries involved in the program
  • Oversee project implementation and support reporting at country level

Qualifications | Profile:

  • University degree in agriculture, nutrition, social science or any other relevant discipline. Masters degree is an added advantage
  • Proven knowledge of the food and nutrition sector in Malawi including advocacy work
  • Prior working experience in policy development and dialogue is required
  • Knowledge and experience implementing rights-based approaches
  • Familiar with social accountability tools i.e. community score cards
  • At least 5 years of project management experience in the NGO sector
  • Proven experience in working with partner organizations
  • Strong coordination and communication skills
  • Ability to compile good quality reports
  • Ability to work in teams as well as individual tasks
  • Fluent in English and Chichewa
