The Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) is a fourth Public University established by the Government of Malawi in December, 2012. It has four Schools: Malawi Institute of Technology; Ndata School of Climate and Earth Sciences; Academy of Medical Sciences; and Bingu School of Culture and Heritage. In addition, the University has Centres including (i) Centre for Strategic Studies (ii) Centre for Clinical Studies (iii) Centre for Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management and (iv) MUST Institute for Industrial Research and Innovation (MIIRI).
Exciting opportunities have arisen at the University in the MIIRI for suitably qualified and experienced individuals for the following positions of Research Fellow Trainees in the following areas:

1. Technology Commercialisation and New Venture Development
Reporting to the Director for MIIRI, the Research Fellow Trainees shall be responsible for the development and implementation of strategies and initiatives that will serve to advance the commercialization of innovation and technologies created by MUST faculty, and stakeholders to support the entrepreneurial culture and programs at the university.
The Research Fellow Trainees shall be responsible for primary oversight and management of new initiatives of Technology Commercialization (TC) and New Venture Development (NVD). This position will provide leadership and develop programs to align the strategy and activities of these two groups for the benefit of the faculty, the university and the local ecosystem.
The position holders will provide overall leadership and oversight in supporting Faculty and students’ innovators. In addition, the holders shall be responsible for designing innovation management functions, develop training materials and initiate coaching and mentorship programme for students, faculty and stakeholders. The Research Fellow Trainees shall also broadly be responsible for research and capacity-building programme in the field of innovation, industrial development and transformation.
2. Research, Technology and Innovation
The Trainee in Research, Technology and Innovation (RTI) shall work with MIIRI leadership to oversee research and technology and development of innovations for industrial transformation within the Institute programming. The position holder will work directly with faculty and students’ innovators to support technology design and realisation efforts. In addition, the trainee shall be responsible, for pre-designing innovation management functions, develop draft training materials and initiate coaching and mentorship programme for students, faculty and stakeholders.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Among others; Research Fellow Trainees shall be expected to support either 1) technology commercialisation and new venture development or 2) science, technology and innovation streams by performing the following duties:
Contribute to the MUST2063 Business and Management programming
Contribute to the MUST Innovation Programme
Supporting the attainment of MUST Technology and Innovation Garage strategic objectives;
Contributing to the development of Garage capacity building programs;
Preparing Terms of Reference and calls for proposals for collaborative research in the field of Science, Technology and Innovation;
Operationalise the MUST Innovation Idea Bank (I-Bank);
Contributing to proposal development of project proposals with Schools, Departments or Unit managers, finance and relevant support functions and ensure stakeholders participation prior to submission to funding agencies;
Designing training programs and identify industry coaches to advance community, industry and university innovations;
Compiling monthly consolidated research reports or update for MIIRI Director;
Presenting reports at various forums such as research symposia, conferences, workshops both locally and internationally ensuring the visibility of the Institute and the University;
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
Masters’ degree in any related field
Familiarity with research and technical areas, including science, engineering and computer science, as well as business needs relevant to the commercialization of technology
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively – to present ideas, both in writing and orally, in an understandable, technical and non-technical manner, with internal and external constituencies
Ability to articulate a vision for the role of academic research in innovation, commercialization, job creation, and economic development
