Job Description

The Malawi Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights Alliance has a short term vacancy for Research Assistants to conduct programme endline survey face to face interviews targeting the youth (10-24) in Chikwawa and Mangochi under the Get Up! Speak Out (CUSS) Programme. The Malawi SRHR Alliance is a coalition of six local organisations jointly working together to promote the Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights of young people, women and marginalized groups in the country. The six organizations are Centre for Alternatives for Victimized Women and Children (CAVWOC), Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR), Centre for Youth Empowerment and Civic Education (CYECE), Family Planning Association of Malawi (FPAM), Youth net and Counseling (YONECO) and the Coalition of Women Living with HIV and AIDS (COWLHA). The alliance secretariat is at Centre for Youth Empowerment and Civic Education (CYECE) in area 15/6, Gogo Jenala Compound.

Get Up! Speak Out (GUSO) programme is a multinational SRHR Programme supported by Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affair (MoFA) from 2016 to 2020. The programme’s main objective is to ensure that all young people are empowered to realize their Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights in societies that are positive towards young people’s sexuality in Malawi. The endline survey has an objective of establishing how young people are accessing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights information and services in Chikwawa and Mangochi districts.


Position: Research Assistants


Roles and Responsibilities of Research Assistants

  • Assist in planning, designing and testing research questions
  • Participate in research tools piloting
  • Conduct Face to Face interviews with young people
  • Prepare field reports

Requirements for recruitment of research assistants
  • Must be a young person — below 25 years
  • Must have a minimum of diploma or degree level of education in social work, social science or background in statistics or other relevant qualifications
  • Must have had prior experience in data collection processes with reputable non-governmental and other organizations dealing with research focusing on young people.
  • Must be aware of the ethical considerations of conducting research
  • Must be available within the period of the study
  • Must be committed to the task and be ready to work for long hours with minimal supervision
  • Knowledge of the local language (Sena, Yao, Chichewa) of the communities of study.
