Job Description

Saint John of God Hospitaller Services provides both residential and community-based mental health services, and services for children with a disability and/or special needs in the cities of Mzuzu, Lilongwe and their environs. This is done through inpatient, outpatient and community based mental health programs; rehabilitation and vocational training for people recuperating from mental illness, people with disability and other special needs; special education and community-based rehabilitation for children with disability or epilepsy. The service also provides university level training in psychiatric nursing, general nursing, clinical medicine (psychiatry) and counselling. Position title : Psychosocial Counsellor

Location : Mzuzu

Reports to : Head of Psychosocial Counselling

Purpose of the position

The Psychosocial Counsellor will be responsible for ensuring the integration of counselling and provision of counselling services to staff and clients. This will include formulation of personal objectives and ensuring that they are attained and liaising with team leader in assessing their performance based on the objectives as well as other areas specified in the appraisal form and job descriptions

Key Responsibilities

  • Planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating all counselling programmes for all clients attending Saint John of God Hospitaller Services
  • Carrying out structured reviews of individual goals for each client undergoing counselling services at St. John of God Hospitaller Services
  • Offering individual and group counselling sessions to clients
  • Compiling accurate and comprehensive monthly and quarterly clients’ progress report


  • University Diploma in Counselling or its equivalent obtained from a recognised institution.
  • A team player with good interpersonal communication skills
  • A minimum of one year experience in a related post
  • Willingness to work with mentally challenged persons and their families.
  • Strict adherence to our Child and Vulnerable Adult Protection Policy
