BLANTYRE MALARIA PROJECT

Job Title : Psychologist – 2 posts

Reporting to : Study Physician


 
Location : Blantyre, Malawi

BACKGROUND

The Blantyre Malaria Project, an affiliate of the College of Medicine, University of Malawi has received grant funding from the National Health Institute through the University of Maryland (United States of America).

Blantyre Malaria Project will implement this grant through its REFINE Project based at Ndirande and Bvumbwe Health Centres. REFINE is a 5 year long study which will simultaneously evaluate the contribution of HIV exposure, immune activation at birth and environmental and psychosocial factors to neurocognitive development in Children who are HIV exposed but Uninfected (CHEU).


 
PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The post-holders (2) (will be on an initial 1 year contract) will be responsible for:

•  Conducting developmental assessments through direct observation of children from 0-5 years;
•  To conduct anthropometric measurements on all children from 0-5 To undertake some reliability checking of developmental assessments during piloting phase.
•  To undertake some focus group discussions and interviews of caregivers and professionals who work with children from 0-5.

GENERAL TASKS

•  To work according to research protocols (S.O.P.s) set out by the project. Field
•  To conduct study assessments (including questionnaires and group discussions)
•  To conduct interviews and focus group discussions with parents and professionals who work with children from 0-5 years.
•  To ensure that participants are well informed and well cared for at all times.
•  Communication (Study team)
•  To report any urgent issues or questions immediately to the Study Physician;
•  To provide a short weekly progress report (verbal/written as agreed) on: enrollment; any non-urgent issues/questions/comments arising;
•  Contribution to other work
•  To carry out any further tasks consistent with level of training and experience as assigned by the senior study or in-charge medical staff.
•  Equipment and documentation
•  To ensure that all equipment, supplies and documentation, are prepared in advance for assessments;
•  To be aware of, and follow quality control and quality assurance procedures.

Qualifications/specifications

•  Bachelor’s Degree in Social Science majoring Psychology or Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. Masters Degree in Developmental Psychology will be an added advantage.
•  Knowledge and experience in administering developmental assessments to children from 0-5 years
•  Previous training in research skills e.g. consent procedures and ethics
•  Some experience in qualitative work or interviewing of parents and caregivers.
•  Good communication skills (Chichewa and English)
