Project Officer (Youth Test Farm)

Job Description

Conserve with Benefits (C with B) is a Malawian-based registered non-governmental and not-for-profit organization. We design and implement simple but scalable environmental-conscious and livelihood transforming projects to ensure sustainable and resilient livelihoods and quality environments. We do this by collaborating with other like-minded national and international partners who share the belief that environmental conservation should generate benefits for the people. We are currently starting to implement a Youth Test Farm project in Ukwe EPA, T/A Kabudula in Lilongwe district. C with B is therefore seeking to recruit a Project Officer who will be responsible for the day-to-day project activities at the farm. The successful candidate must be trained in Agriculture; including agronomy or horticulture, with some adequate knowledge in livestock production. This is a farm that is intended to be both a learning ground for young farmers as well as a farm that seeks to produce and sell agricultural products to maintain its sustainability. As a farm and a project under development, the Project Officer will be responsible for daily farm operations, assisting and guiding youth in their learning process on the farm as well as developing the project.

The Project Officer of the Youth Test Farm will have the following key responsibilities:


Education and Outreach

The Project Officer;

  • Will be responsible for the inculcation of practical skills and knowledge on modern and sustainable farming methods that will be demonstrated at the farm.
  • Will be involved in the development of a curriculum and training materials for the youth test farm.
  • Will be responsible for the mobilization and facilitation of extensive training for the youth on the farm.

Farm Development

  • Implement a workable crop rotation plan.
  • Develop and implement a calendar for horticulture crops, especially those of high market value.
  • Develop a crop planting calendar in line with the seasons of the year.
  • Plan out a composting schedule for demonstration purposes as well as for applying in the fields.
  • Champion conservation agriculture to conserve the soil and enhance its fertility for the purposes of education as well farm productivity.
  • Explore the applicability of irrigation in horticulture fields and develop an irrigation plan.

Livestock and crop integration

  • Manage small ruminants /poultry /pigs that would forage on on-farm crop residues to promote manure availability for compost making.
  • Manage honey bees (Apiary) on the farm for enhanced crop pollination and honey production.

Labour force management

  • The farm will maintain a few key personnel on a permanent basis. The rest of the work will be done by persons employed on a temporary basis. The Project Officer will therefore be responsible for the management of farm personnel to effectively contribute to the goals of the project

Equipment maintenance

  • The Project Officer will be the custodian of both small tools (hand hoes, garden forks, shovels, etc.) and bigger equipment such as tractor and its accessories, irrigation equipment, and farm buildings. He/She will ensure that farm equipments are clean, well used, and well maintained.


  • Develop and use simple monitoring tools for progress tracking.
  • Develop and file project-related documents/reports for records and monitoring
  • Evaluate progress and provide recommendations on skills/knowledge development and farm productivity.
  • Keep track of project expenses.


Applicants should;

  • Possess a minimum of a Diploma in Agricultural Science or any related field from an accredited learning institution
  • Have a minimum of 2-year work experience as a farm manager
  • Should have demonstrable ability to create innovations for farm advancement
  • knowledge and skills in Farmer Market School facilitation and the design and implementation of TOT training.
  • Capability in mobilizing relevant stakeholders including youth farmers
  • Be aged under 40 years.
  • Have good written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to make decisions regarding own work, often in ambiguous situations and suggest recommendations regarding own function/discipline; and
  • Be willing to live in a rural setting/community
  • Conversant with the Microsoft Office package especially Word and Excel.
