Job Description

Saint John of God Hospitaller Services provides both residential and community-based mental health services, and services for children with a disability and/or special needs in the cities of Mzuzu, Lilongwe and their environs. This is done through inpatient, outpatient and community based mental health programs; rehabilitation and vocational training for people recuperating from mental illness, people with disability and other special needs; special education and community-based rehabilitation for children with disability or epilepsy. The service also provides university level training in psychiatric nursing, general nursing, clinical medicine (psychiatry) and counselling. Saint John of God Hospitaller Services therefore seeks to recruit persons to fill the following vacant posts:



Position: PROJECT OFFICER – Inclusive Education/Special Needs Education




Project: Early Childhood Care and Development


Location : Mzimba South


Reports to : The Projects Coordinator


Purpose of the Position


Under the general supervision of the Projects Coordinator, the Project Officer-Inclusive Education/ Special Needs will be responsible for operationalization of inclusion approaches, practices and policies to support Early Childhood Care and Development related achievements of deprived children in the impact areas and Community Based Child Care Centres.


Responsibilities (which include, but not limited to)

  • She/he will assist with provision of policy and technical advice on all inclusion aspects with special focus on enhancing participation of children from children with disabilities, ultra-poor households, and girls in education
  • She/he will be pivotal in promoting and advocating for operationalization of inclusion approaches, practices and policies to support ECCD related achievements of deprived children in the impact areas and CBCCs.
  • She/he will work in close collaboration with ECCD project team and other stakeholders within project sites to identify and strengthen support for inclusive education and inclusive ECCD project activities through information sharing, joint meetings and campaigns
  • She/he will work with the Project Coordinator and staff responsible for rehabilitation services within Saint John of God Hospitaller Services to ensure active engagement of Caregivers and parents of children with disabilities and those with other deprivations to ensure appropriate support is provided to the children. This will include supporting visits to homes of deprived children by Caregivers and other volunteers.
  • She will actively engage Health Surveillance Assistants, staff responsible for rehabilitation services within Saint John of God Hospitaller Services and Caregivers in the growth monitoring and assessments of all CBCC and 0-2 years old children in the impact areas
  • She/he will ensure effective identification of children with disabilities and other deprived children in the communities and CBCCs, their screening by specialists and their referral to appropriate referral agencies and service providers
  • She/he will identify inclusion barriers in the CBCCs and communities requiring technical support and support the Project Coordinator with the design and implementation of remedial strategies for effective implementation of inclusive ECCD practices in the project


Requirements

  • Degree in Social Work with a major in Special Needs Education, Social Sciences and other related fields.
  • Those with additional trainings in Disability Management, Inclusive Education or Special Needs Education models/approaches, Child Protection, Psychosocial Support will have an added advantage
  • Two to three years’ experience and understanding of Inclusive Education and Special Needs Education programming
  • Experience working with Disabled Peoples Organizations (DPOs) and Referral Agencies for children with disabilities
  • Solid understanding of Inclusive Education and Child Protection issues, as well as issues relating to deprived children
  • Strong English writing skills
  • Representational and Advocacy skills
  • Good interpersonal skills with ability to communicate effectively at all levels
  • Willingness to work with persons with mental health challenges and children with disability and their families.
  • Strick adherence our Vulnerable Adult and Child Protection Policy\u2022 Those with motorcycle riding license will have added advantage
