Job Description

Mental Health Users and Carers Association (MeHUCA) is a volunteer-based, patient advocacy organization working directly with users of mental health services and their carers. MeHUCA focuses on promoting and protecting the rights of persons with mental health conditions in Malawi by creating an enabling environment where they can thrive without discrimination and stigmatization. MeHUCA is implementing a 12 month program funded by Disability Rights Fund (DRF). The overall objective of the project is to ‘Raise Awareness of the Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities among Mental Health Peers Support Group Members and Community Leaders’ in two local districts of Mangochi and Nkhotakota. By raising awareness, the project will be building the capacity of support group members, community leaders and members on knowledge and skills of mental health, mental health conditions and their ability to advocate for their human rights.

A fixed term job opportunity has arisen with MeHUCA Secretariat for the position of Project Coordinator, directly reporting to the Executive Director and based in Blantyre.

The Project Coordinator will work directly with DRF’s Program Officer for Malawi to successfully ensure the implementation of the CRPD Awareness Project in two districts in Malawi. The Project Coordinator will work closely with the Executive Director in order to achieve program objectives and targets outlined in the project scope of work.


  • Overall implementation and coordination of the project and project deliverables
  • Generate narrative reports and submit to the Executive Director
  • Organize progress review meetings and activities that ensure effective coordination, learning and exchange of information among staff members
  • Resolve problems with CRPD Awareness Project as they arise
  • Work closely with district level government structures to promote CRPD Awareness objectives
  • Monitor and evaluate projects in the field during travels to the project sites
  • Ensure that gender, diversity, gender based violence and environmental issues are effectively taken on board in all project plans
  • Undertakes any other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.


  • A Bachelor’s in Social Work, Psychology and Community Development and/or two to five years experience working with vulnerable groups.
  • Previous experience in organizing/managing grant-funded programs is highly desirable as is the experience in public speaking.

  • Maintain meticulous records and manage program progress tracking
  • Prepare information, statistical and narrative reports
  • Work effectively independently, with minimal supervision, as well as collaborate with other team members
  • Adapt to changing work demands
  • Manage task priorities and being able to meet deadlines
  • Work effectively under pressure
  • Work occasional weekends and evenings.
