Job Description

The Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) is a new University formed by merging the College of Medicine and Kamuzu College of Nursing and established by an Act of Parliament (No. 20 of 2019). It is a comprehensive health and allied sciences University and intends to train more health professionals that are globally competent but locally relevant.

The University has vacancies in the following departments and research projects:



Position: Professor / Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer / Lecturer in Biomedical Forensic Science (2 full-time positions)


Position Summary

These positions are for academic candidates with undergraduate training in Medical Laboratory science (Biomedical Science) or Pathology or any medical related field with at least a Master’s degree or higher postgraduate qualifications in the relevant areas of specializations. The level of appointment at Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor, or Professor will depend on standard university criteria such as postgraduate qualifications, publications, research, academic scholarship and academic leadership. They will be expected to teach and supervise students; be actively engaged in university administrative duties; conduct research in their area of specialization; and conduct consultancies and outreach programs. The level of appointment at Assistant Lecturer will require an honors degree in Medical Laboratory Science (Biomedical Science). The successful candidate will be offered an employment contract in line with the KUHeS terms and conditions.

Key Duties and Responsibilities


  • Prepare and give lectures, tutorials and deliver course work.
  • Conduct practical sessions and demonstrations in relevant topics.
  • Set exams and conduct assessment of students academic performance.
  • Conduct seminars, trainings, and workshops.
  • Set exams and conduct assessment of students work
  • Participate in quality control and curriculum development

Student Attachment/Supervision

  • Plan and arrange student attachments
  • Provide guidelines for student placement
  • Supervise student during laboratory sessions and attachments
  • Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students in writing research papers and dissertations

Research, Consultancy and Outreach

  • Write and submit competitive research proposals for funding
  • Conduct research in one’s area of expertise
  • Provide specialist service while conducting hospital ward rounds with various clinical departments
  • Disseminate research results at conferences and in peer-reviewed journals

Administrative duties

  • Serve in different administrative and academic committees in the University.
  • Attend departmental, school, University and other meetings as required.
  • Coordinate academic programs and activities


Applicants must have the following:

  • PhD in relevant area of specialty or at least a Master’s degree in the advertised areas of specialization.
  • Those with professional qualifications will have an added advantage.
  • More than 2 years of practical experience in areas of specialty after attainment of the postgraduate qualification.
  • Evidence of publications in recognized peer reviewed journals.
  • Current registration and in good standing with the Malawi Medical Council or similar regulatory authority, if applicable.
  • Those with prior experience in health profession education will have an added advantage.
