Job Description


The National Registration Bureau (NRB) is a Government Department under the Ministry of Homeland Security. Through the National Registration Act (2010), NRB is mandated to implement, coordinate, manage and maintain the National Registration and Identification System (NRIS) in Malawi. NRB has the following deliverables: Birth Certificates; National Identity Cards for bonafide Malawians; Identity Cards for foreigners; Certificate of Registration of Marriage and Death Certificates.

National Registration Bureau with support from Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC) intends to fill the following vacant positions under the project Title: Scaling up and Improving Quality of Civil Registration and Vital Statistics in Malawi Through the National Registration Bureau under the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR)

Position: Research Assistants (20 Positions).

The positions will be tenable at Blantyre and Mchinji. The successful candidates will be offered one year contract, renewable based on performance and availability of funding.

Job Description

The Research Assistant will be responsible for registration of deaths, collection of NP samples and submitting them to laboratory for testing, collecting and submitting results to the District Mortality Surveillance Officer


  • Administer the consent form, data collection form and lab requests form
  • Collect demographic information and information around COVID-19 symptoms, comorbidities and testing prior to death using clinical notes and death reports
  • collect samples using swabs [perform NP sample collection] and solicit testing samples using the lab request forms
  • obtain testing results and fill the requisite forms
  • facilitate death registration and Medical Certification of Cause of Death using the NR10
  • Submit reports to the Mortality Surveillance Officer as and when required
  • Conduct sensitization on death registration, medical certification of cause of death and the post-mortem surveillance
  • Ensure that all forms are properly filled, entered into the system and filed
  • Report electronic system performance

Desired Qualifications Skills and Competencies.

  • A good clinical, medical laboratory or nursing practice certificate
  • At least 3 years’ experience working in hospital set up
  • Computer literate with experience in utilizing electronic data capturing methods, Microsoft office, and internet application systems
  • Ability to adhere to good clinical practice
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to pay attention to details.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Mature, with good sense of confidentiality and judgement.
  • Respectful to local ethics.

Post entry training:

Specific job related training will be provided for each position through in-house training, to familiarize / enable the incumbent to perform his/her duties in accordance with procedures of NRB and its donors.
