Job Description

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international independent medical humanitarian organization working in partnership with the Ministry of Health and other actors in Blantyre and environs on cervical cancer project.

MSF-FRANCE is recruiting suitable candidate for the position of:

Position: Nurse: Palliative Care  (Based in Blantyre)

General duties:

  • Organizing and carrying out care and treatments according to medical prescriptions, and assisting during consultations, daily rounds and other medical procedures. Participating in health education of the patient (and family) when necessary.
  • Ensuring patients are properly received and installed and that those with lack of autonomy are assisted, especially regarding their feeding, personal hygiene, movements and comfort. During emergencies, detecting the priority acute/emergency cases, carrying out first aid care and referring them to the doctor when necessary
  • Carrying out admission, surveillance and follow-up of patients (i.e. assessment of the evolution of their state of health and the identification of any emergency situation or deterioration
  • Provide comprehensive assessment and regular review of palliative care patients, using an integrated and anticipatory approach.
  • Record in the individual patient’s card and registration books, all performed medical activities (drugs prescribed lab results, epidemiological activity, doses, etc.).Keep data traceability in order to ensure patients treatment continuity.
  • Screen patients and their families for clinical, psychosocial and spiritual needs, focusing on strengths and needs, social supports, financial and legal concerns.
  • Participate in nutrition screening of patients and manage according to plan/protocol.
  • Assess patients nursing needs and the primary caregiver’s ability to provide care at home.
  • Assist patient in evaluating physical symptoms related to the disease process while setting goals and plans to manage them.
  • Ensure all elements of patient records are complete, including treatment charts, care plans, symptom assessment tools and evaluation of interventions.
  • Educate patients, families and staff (hospital and home based) regarding palliative care and end of life issues. Provide ongoing consultancy for patients and their families.
  • Adhere to the practice of confidentiality regarding patients, families, staff, and the organization.

Contract details:

  • Fixed-term contract ( Maternity replacement )
  • Intended starting date: 1 April 2020

Skills & Qualifications:
  • Degree/diploma in Nursing and current enrollment in Nurses/Midwives Council of Malawi essential
  • Two years of previous experience in nursing essential, experience with NGO preferred
  • Knowledge/experience in home care, hospice, palliative care, pain management, symptom control, and discharge planning desirable
  • Sensitivity to people living with a life-limiting condition, those who are dying or bereaved
