Job Description

Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) is an international independent medical humanitarian organization working in partnership with the Ministry of Health and other actors in Blantyre and environs on a cervical cancer project.

MSF-FRANCE is recruiting a suitable candidate for the position of Nurse (or Midwife): Cervical Cancer Screening, Oncology, and Palliative Care (Based in Blantyre and Chiradzulu Districts)

General duties

  • Follows VIA, cold-coagulation, infection control, and palliative care guidelines, standards, and protocols to ensure patient safety and consistent, high-level care.
  • Ensures patients are properly received and cared for, with a patient-centred approach, and that those with lack of autonomy are assisted, especially regarding their feeding, personal hygiene, mobility, and comfort.
  • Carries out admission, surveillance, and follow-up of patients (i.e. assessment of the evolution of their state of health and the identification of any emergency situation or deterioration).
  • Arranges and provides nursing care and treatments based on multidisciplinary care plans and medical orders.
  • Assists during consultations and medical procedures, and partakes in rounds with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Ensures that facilities are clean, equipment is sterile; and inventory and supplies are ordered and stocked to allow for efficient same-day care (cervical screening and treatment or palliative care).
  • Detects priority acute/emergency cases, carries out first aid care, and refers to the doctor when necessary.
  • Provides comprehensive assessment and regular review of cervical cancer and palliative care patients, using an integrated and anticipatory approach, working alongside other health care providers.
  • Screens patients and their families for clinical, psychosocial, spiritual, legal, and financial needs, assessing strengths, supports, and risks, and makes appropriate referrals.
  • Participates in nutritional screening of patients and manages according to treatment protocols.
  • Ensures all elements of patient records are complete, including treatment charts, MOH log books, care plans, symptom assessment tools, intervention evaluations, as well as monthly/quarterly MSF/MOH reporting.
  • Educates patients, families, and staff (hospital, health center, and home-based) regarding cervical cancer screening and treatment, palliative care, symptom management, and end-of-life care.
  • With informed patient consent assists patients in evaluating physical symptoms related to disease progression, and together sets goals and a care plan to manage symptoms, utilizing patient counselling and education.
  • Adheres to the practice of confidentiality regarding patients, families, staff, and the organization.
  • Identifies and reports to the MSF activity manager all challenges and problems encountered during delivery of cervical cancer screening and treatment and palliative services, proposing solutions for service improvement

Contract details
  • Fixed-term contract with intended renewal
  • Intended starting date: July 2019

Skills & Qualifications
  • Degree/Diploma in Nursing/Midwifery and current enrollment in Nurses/Midwives Council of Malawi essential
  • Two years of previous experience in Nursing/Midwifery essential: experience with NGO or MOH preferred
  • Knowledge/experience in home care, hospice, palliative care, pain management, symptom control, discharge planning, cervical cancer screening, or reproductive health desirable but not compulsory
  • Sensitivity to people living with a life-limiting condition, those who are dying or bereaved
