Management Solutions Consulting (Mw) Limiteds client, Habitat for Humanity Malawi (HFHM), seeks to engage suitably qualified and experienced Malawian executives to fill the position of National Director (ND) tenable in Lilongwe. This is a challenging position requiring the services of highly qualified, experienced and results-oriented Malawian professionals who are recognised leaders with leading & edge skills in their respective areas of expertise. Established in Malawi in 1986, HFHM is a non-profit Christian organization affiliated with Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI). By providing people adequate, decent and affordable housing solutions, HFHM contributes to the improvement of living conditions for low Income and vulnerable groups In Malawi

Position: NATIONAL DIRECTOR



Overall Purpose

This is a challenging and high profile position requiring the services of an accomplished multi-skilled, highly experienced, visionary and pragmatic executive with proven leadership and management capabilities.

With a dual reporting responsibility to the Chairman of the Board of Directors, HFH Malawi AND to the HFHI East Africa Director, the National Director is the most senior position In the Malawi organization and is part of the Senior Management Team. This role has overall accountability and responsibility for the strategic, programmatic, financial and management operations. The position articulates, communicates and advocates the country offices Mission and leads the implementation of the organizations Vision in Malawi.

Supporting, guiding and informing the Senior Management Team (SMT), this position provides overall leadership to the country staff. The role implements policy, develops strategy, builds strategic partnerships and resources the organization&s work to ensure sustainability of a large supporter base and implementation of country programs.



Summary of Core Responsibilities

Specifically, the incumbent will be responsible for the following main functions:

  • Leadership and Strategic Management.
  • Corporate governance/Board Relations.
  • Operations Management
  • Program Development and Delivery.
  • Compliance.
  • Resource Mobilization/ Fundraising.
  • Relationships and Advocacy.

 

Qualifications, Experience and Competencies

This position requires a highly motivated person with the following attributes:

  • Masters’ degree in international development, social science, development economics, public administration, business administration, housing and urban development, or other related fields.
  • At least ten (10) years related management experience in a not-for-profit organization (with a strong understanding of NGO operational requirements); with at least 5 years at senior management level.
  • Experience in acquiring and managing large scale grants/projects and compliance with diverse donor requirements (USAID, DFID, UN agencies, etc.).
  • Demonstrable network of contacts with proven track record of building partnerships with stakeholders, including government bodies, donors, corporate entities, other NGOs/INGOs and bilateral donors.
  • Knowledge of housing issues in Malawi and affordable housing solutions.
  • Experience in developing organizational strategies and translating these strategies into effective implementation plans.
  • Proven experience in leading and managing staff, including recruitment, staff development, training, mentoring and performance assessment.
  • Demonstrated financial management competence, including the preparation and management of budgets and contracts.
  • Experience in program and project management, including knowledge monitoring and evaluation.
  • Enthusiastic commitment to HFH mission, purposes, goals, mission focus and core values.
  • Ability to project and promote HFHM mission and accomplishments within and outside the organization.
  • Good communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
  • Sensitivity in working with diverse cultures.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data.
  • Outcome focused.
  • Capacity to build trust, team work and ensure accountability among staff.
  • Effective roll up the sleeves work ethic with attention to detail.
  • Willingness to travel extensively In Malawi and occasionally internationally.
