Job Description

Médecins Sans Frontières is a private, non-profit international humanitarian organization dedicated to providing medical assistance to populations in crisis, without discrimination and regardless of race, religion, creed or political affiliation. In Malawi, MSF works in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the local community in integrated HIV/AIDS in Chiradzulu District and Cervical Cancer projects Blantyre districts.

Main purpose of the position

Provide mental nursing / care, treatment and follow-up of patients, according to stipulated protocols applied in service and universal hygiene standards/precautions, in order to ensure the quality and continuity of care for the targeted population.

Know, promote, implement and follow at all times the universal hygiene standards/ precautions, bio-hazard prevention and infection control, security rules and other protocols and procedures in the medical premises and ensure high standards of hygiene of his/her working environment.

Main responsibilities

  • Organize and carry out care and treatments according to psychiatric prescriptions, as well as assist them during consultations/ daily rounds and other medical/mental health procedures.
  • Respect medical secret and confidentiality
  • Facilitate referral, surveillance and follow-up of patients meaning assessment of their mental health state evolution, and identification of emergency or any deterioration,
  • Participate in psych health education of the patient (and family) when necessary
  • Carry-out administrative procedures and documents (fill in patients files, forms, consumptions, statistics, etc.), ensure an appropriate written/oral handover, and report any problematic situations and cases that may arise. fill in all necessary registers and health files, participate in data collection and keep doctors/supervisors informed.
  • Ensure screening activities to detect mental health problems, following validated screening tools
  • Able to make diagnosis and to provide appropriate psychosocial support accordingly
  • Implement mental health consultations to patients, undertaking a complete historical and clinical examination
  • Ensure that patients receive proper treatment including psychotropic medication and psychosocial support.
  • Follow-up of patients’ mental health evolution, identifying possible emergency situations arising and keeping the medical team informed
  • Implement and follow all MSF Mental Health standards protocols, guidelines and documents elaborated for the mental health activities in order to offer appropriate support for patients
  • Hand over properly the patient’s mental status and follow up plans to other mental health nurses
  • Identify possible mental health issues and inform Patient Support Activity Manager (PSAM)
  • Participate in the health education and/or treatment process.
  • Ensure good communication with the other components of the project.
  • Share problematic situations and cases with PSAM for assistance with decision-making and problem resolution.
  • Prepare and maintain patient files
  • Participate in multidisciplinary meeting
  • On request, perform any additional duties given by the immediate supervisor in order to allow the organization to function optimally.


  • Essential Diploma /Degree in mental health/psychiatric Nursing
  • Desirable: Medical knowledge, especially HIV related


  • Experience in Mental health care set up or similar background
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in mental health set up
