Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) is an international independent medical humanitarian organization working in partnership with the Ministry of Health and other actors in Blantyre and environs on cervical cancer project. MSF-FRANCE is recruiting suitable candidate for the position of:

Post: Medical Doctor: Palliative Care (Based in Blantyre)

General duties

• Initiate and participate in ongoing advanced care with the patient and primary care giver
• Initiate and participate in the preparation for end of life with the patient and primary caregivers
• Provide support, advice, education and advocacy for all patients and their primary caregiver.
• Plan and coordinate services (with other disciplines) relating to end of life care with the patient and primary caregiver.
• Anticipate after-hours requirements and ensure preparations are in place for patient and primary care giver should the need arise.
• Ensure that patient care plan meets professional, organizational, legal and ethical requirements at all times.
• Deliver a high standard of care regardless of patients’ or colleagues’ differing values, beliefs, culture and/or social context. Contribute to excellent multidisciplinary practice and promote respectful and constructive team relationships.
• Apply medical knowledge and skills for diagnosis and prevention_ Carry out outpatient and inpatient consultations, prescribing the necessary treatment respecting MSF protocols.
• Keep the patient and/or his/her family informed about the illness and provide appropriate explanations about the treatment to follow, checking they have understood
• Check and control the rational distribution of medicines and equipment under his/her responsibility and take care the quality, disinfection and sterilization of the medical material. Assure general compliance with standing hygiene standards.
• Ensure ongoing training of the medical/paramedical multidisciplinary team in order to optimize the quality of care.
• Knows ‘and ensures all MSF medical protocols are followed and implemented, checking’ universal precautions are followed at all times and reducing bio-hazard risks and improving infection control. Ensures professional confidentiality is respected.
• Initiate a comprehensive assessment and regular review of palliative care patients using an integrated and anticipatory approach.

Contract details

• Fixed-term contract with intended renewal
• Intended starting date: immediate

Skills & Qualifications

• Medical Doctor degree and current membership in Medical Council of Malawi required 
• Two years’ experience as a Medical Doctor or in clinical work (can be within medical training) essential
• Previous experience in Public Health, obstetrics-gynaecology, and/or infectious diseases-HIV/AIDS/ STDs/TB, general , medicine or minor surgery is desirable
• Sensitivity to people living with a life-limiting condition, those who are dying or bereaved.
