Background
As a federal enterprise, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH supports the German Government in achieving its objective in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development. GIZ operates in more than 130 countries around the globe. GIZ has been working for more than 30 years in Malawi. The country is a priority for German international cooperation and currently focuses on three priority areas: education, health and private sector development in rural areas. In addition to our work on these areas, we also work on public financial and economic management and social protection.
The Afikepo/ Nutrition and Access to Primary Education project aims at contributing to nutrition security in Malawi. It supports the Ministry of Education in implementing the National School Health and Nutrition Strategic Plan. The project assists schools and communities in providing high-quality school meals and promotes healthy nutrition and good hygiene practices to improve the nutritional status and to increase the attendance of pupils.
The project has been implemented in eleven districts; Chitipa, Kasungu, Karonga, Mulanje, Mzimba, Nkhata Bay, Nkhotakota, Chiradzulu, Salima and Thyolo. The project runs until October 2021 and is co-funded by the European Union and the German Government. The programme focuses on three fields of activity:
