Job Description

The CCAP Nkhoma Synod wishes fo recruit suitably qualified and experienced Malawians to fill a vacant position which exists in its water & environmental department. The successful candidate shall be offered an initial performance-based contract for a period of three (3) years. upon satisfactory six months’ probation performance appraisal followed by annual performance appraisals, with a possibility of an extension, an attractive salary, benefits and gratuity packages commensurate with seniority of the position and qualifications of the candidate.



Position: Manager of Water & Environmental Department



Reports to: Water & Environmental Board


Duty station: Nkhoma


Job Summary

The Manager is responsible for day-to-day business within the water and environmental department. Supervises, motivates, and daily supports the 40 employees, applying a team approach and maintaining open communication. The Manager plans. schedules. strategizes, and oversees all activities while continually improving the department and maintaining profitability. The Manager performs essential functions to ensure overall customer satisfaction and quality service, and establishes and maintains effective communication with employees and clients.


Roles and Responsibilities

  • Managing daily business on pumping, treatment and supplying of water to the customers including billing and revenue collection
  • Managing all the departments assets such as pumps. pipeline network, reservoirs. buildings and motor vehicles
  • Planning. organizing and directing implementation of water supply services operational, financial, human resource, administrative, organizational and cultural activities in the department
  • Working closely with accountant and HR on issues such as yearly budget and outsourced contracts
  • Organizing annual work plans and employee workflow according to workload to meet demands and to timely completion of assigned jobs and creating an appropriate working climate in the Department
  • Organizing and monitoring movement of materials for use within the department and coordinate procurement with relevant management
  • Developing and reviewing strategies such as non-revenue water reduction, expansion of the water system and financial management
  • Attending complaints and queries related to the departments customers and attending various meetings with stake holders to represent interests of the department
  • Developing of a strategic plan and recommendation of the plan to the Board by including/involving the Board in the early stages of the strategy development
  • Reporting regularly to the Board and the board committees on the overall progress and results against operating and financial objectives, providing them with periodic reports and organize those meetings

Qualifications and Experience

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Civil engineering from a recognized institution, those with a Masters’ degree can have an advantage.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a senior managerial position.


Competences and Attributes

The ideal candidate for the position must:
  • Be a committed Christian preferably a Presbyterian
  • Demonstrate strong maturity and interpersonal skis to work with Church Leadership and members.
  • Have excellent leadership and team building skills (must be a team worker with good working relationship with people across the synod, department and related institutions)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Good general computer operation skills in Microsoft Office packages (Excel, Word. Access. Outlook and PowerPoint)
  • Knowledge of financial management and civil engineering is essential
