Job Description

The Agricultural Research and Extension Trust (ARET) is Malawi’s premier institution in tobacco research. extension and training services Established in 1995 and funded primarily by tobacco growers, ARET’s core activities include development and dissemination of tobacco technologies and training of tobacco stakeholders in order to sustain and improve agricultural productivity while conserving the natural resources.

An opportunity has arisen for professionals with requisite academic qualifications, technical expertise, leadership acumen and managerial experience to take up the position of Management Accountant.

Position: Management Accountant


Key Responsibilities

Management Accountant will assist in establishing of the Trust’s financial policies and maintains management information systems and assist managerial planning business decision making in order to reduce operational and production costs of the Trust by identifying and implementing more efficient strategies.


Job Description

Position: Management Accountant

Grade: PG 3


Location : Finance, Kandiya

Reports to: The Finance and Administration Manager

Purpose: To produce financial reports and ensuring adherence to internal controls.

Core Functions

  • Design internal controls and ensure adherence.
  • Prepare audited financial statements.
  • Prepare management accounts.
  • Manage external audits
  • Ensure that farm operations are conducted efficiently and cost-effectively
  • Manage Accounts receivables and accounts payables
  • Ensure compliance with international Accounting Standards
  • Keeping a daily back up of accounting data.
  • Supervise the work of the accounts staff by ensuring that the following tasks are done on time.
  • Monthly bank reconciliations
  • Monthly creditors reconciliations
  • Regular maintenance of the general ledger
  • Regular follow up of outstanding debtors
  • Ensure completeness and accuracy of documents in support of payments.
  • Administer all tax related duties and
  • Coordinate preparation of the annual budget

Key Competences

  • Demonstrate up to date knowledge of the latest accounting standards.
  • Ability to work without supervision
  • Hands on experience in using accounting packages
  • Highly competent in using Microsoft word, excel and outlook
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Team leader
  • Ability able to meet challenging deadlines.

Qualifications and experience

  • Bachelor of Accountancy Degree from a recognized of University plus professional qualifications such as ACCA or CIMA.
  • Must be a member of ICAM
  • 5 years practical work experience in a busy accounting office.
