Job Description


The Gender and Justice Unit (GJU) is a non-governmental organization that hones in on legal empowerment as one of the most powerful catalysts of gender equality and social justice. Thus, The GJU utilizes the law as a tool for gender equality and social justice through; strategic litigation, legal research, mobilization through strategic partnerships and strengthening access to justice through pro bono legal representation, research and advocacy.

The Gender Justice Unit (GJU) in collaboration with Laws. Africa (Laws) and the Southern African Institute for Policy and Research (SAIPAR) are implementing a project “Digitizing and Disseminating Legal Information for an Empowered Civil Society in Malawi and Zambia”

The overall objective of the action is to enable the citizens of Malawi and Zambia to access and use public legal and policy information as part of their right to know, and in realization of their rights to hold the government to account and to participate in public decision-making

The project focuses on legal and policy information as means of promotion and protection of human rights, fundamental freedoms and to the strengthening of the international framework for the promotion and protection of human rights, justice and the rule of law in Malawi and Zambia.

The GJU is inviting applications from qualified candidates to fill the position of Legal Coordinator.

Position: Legal Coordinator

  • Liaise between the project team, the external consultants, relevant national institutions and funders, where necessary.
  • Provide research, coordination, material support as requested;
  • Under the guidance of the Executive Director, collate subject-based collections as required by the project charter
  • Administer budget and expense records under the supervision of the Executive Director
  • Establish workflows for collection and publication of primary legal material for the LII;
  • Supervise Legal and Librarian Assistant and provide support in auditing content collections against law reports and government gazettes to ensure completeness;
  • Manage the Malawi LII website
  • Train new project team members on the administration and management of the LII website;
  • Organize workshops as per the project plan
  • Implement an effective launch and marketing plan for the LII and the content;
  • Prepare regular newsletters
  • Prepare reports for stakeholders charting progress and listing challenges.
  • Plan for the introduction of standardization of material produced by the judiciary and the legislature
  • Providing legal support services under the supervision of the senior management;
  • Organizing programs and activities in accordance with the mission and goals of the organization
  • Organizing, attending and participating in stakeholder meetings.
  • Producing accurate and timely reporting of program status throughout its life cycle and ensuring project deadlines are met
  • Providing administrative support as needed.
  • Organizing media campaigns (social media, television, and radio)
  • Utilize WhatsApp and other channels to communicate legal and policy developments with media and CSOs


Qualifications and skills:

  • Knowledge management, stakeholder engagement
  • Law degree from an accredited University completed or in progress is a distinct advantage
  • Attention to detail, proof editing – highly advantageous
  • Required computer and Internet literacy
  • Highly advantageous – good written communication skills
  • Experience on maintaining media and stakeholder relationship is an advantage


  • Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimum or no supervision.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and targets in a high pressure setting.
  • Excellent analytical skills.
