Job Description

Blantyre Malaria Project (BMP), a research affiliate of the University of Malawi College of Medicine, would like to invite applications from qualified candidates to fill the following post:

POST: Laboratory Technician

QUALIFICATION : Degree or Diploma in Laboratory Technology from a recognized institution.

REPORTING TO : Principal Investigators GENERAL SUMMARY

The Laboratory Technician will be required to work at the Pediatric Malaria Research Ward —Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital. His/her responsibility would be to collect samples, study and screen for malaria parasites microscopically and performing packed cell volume analysis in A & E, the Pediatric Research Ward lab, and for “bench patients”

The ideal candidate should have the following:

  • Good interpersonal skills: must have the ability to work in a team and interact with various professionals such as physicians, nurses, fellow laboratory technologists, ward clerks etc.
  • Ability to consistently follow procedures and follow up on action items.
  • A HIGH degree of organization • Capacity to be proactive and to work under pressure.
  • Strong analytical skills and computer literacy.
  • Previous experience working in a medical laboratory will be an added advantage.


The ideal candidate will be required to do the following :

  • Screening for malaria parasites microscopically and performing packed cell volume analysis in A & E, in the Paediatric Research Ward lab, and for the “bench patients”
  • Quantifying malaria parasites and pigment in white blood cells and erythrocytes, calculating parasitemia;
  • Identifying species and life cycle stage (sexual, asexual) of malaria parasites;
  • Properly recording laboratory results in the laboratory result book;
  • Reporting pertinent lab results to PRW staff before AM and PM ward rounds;
  • Maintaining general laboratory cleanliness;
  • Preparing laboratory reagents, e.g. Field Stain A and B;
  • Processing samples (spinning and aliquoting) for all studies taking place on PRW and notifying appropriate study staff for ongoing processing of samples;
  • Properly storing all samples in freezers and maintaining a sample grid for the stored samples.;
  • Monitoring and checking the temperature of all refrigerators and freezers in PRW lab and reporting any problems to the line manager;
  • Checking stocks and making internal orders;
  • Making monthly records of workload;
  • Making sure that laboratory equipment is in good working condition;
  • Reporting faulty laboratory equipment and arranging for repair;
  • Advising on the quality of supplied consumables.
