UNC Project, a biomedical research project based in Lilongwe, invites applications from suitably qualified individuals to fill the position of:

Position: Laboratory Research Coordinator

Job Summary

The Laboratory Research Coordinator will work closely with the Laboratory Director to implement and monitor laboratory related research activities within UNC Project. She/he is required to closely work with the Laboratory Supervisors to ensuring that the laboratory employees perform their duties in accordance with the requirements of the study protocols, Good Clinical Laboratory Practices and quality requirements of the UNC Project. The Laboratory Research Coordinator must be accessible to the laboratory and the study teams to provide onsite consultation as needed.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities


  • Liaise with CRS Coordinators, study investigators, laboratory director and all relevant staff ensuring that research and project protocols run smoothly.
  • Attendance to all relevant study team meetings.


  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of all procedures and processes in all on-going research activities especially those in assigned study/studies
  • Assist in the development of laboratory sections of study manuals including training and operation manuals for study staff of assigned study/studies,
  • Assist in the training of study staff in laboratory procedures
  • Review clinic POC test logs i.e. HIV rapid test and Pregnancy test) including QC logs.
  • Monitor the QC Comparison testing of all clinics i.e. 10% HIV rapid testing or 20% Pregnancy Test
  • Provide the Laboratory Director with regular updates on the progress of all research activities within his/her jurisdiction
  • Assist in development of an efficient communication mechanism between the clinic, laboratory and data management staff to ensure accurate reporting and documentation of laboratory data on CRFs.
  • Assist the clinic, laboratory and data management staff with development of solutions to any lapses that may be detected in the collection and evaluation of laboratory data accrued from studies under his/her jurisdiction.
  • Partake in development of research proposals and conducting mini studies wherever and whenever necessary.
  • Participate in conference calls relevant to research studies under his/her jurisdiction.
  • Responds to technical and logistical problems encountered in the laboratory in a timely and appropriate manner.

Audit and Quality Control

  • Interact with clinic, laboratory and data management staff to ensure that complete and accurate data are collected to the best ability of all research staff.
  • Assist and ensure the development laboratory related procedures and processes described in study protocols before initiation of any study
  • Develop and update laboratory related Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all procedures and processes described in a study protocol
  • Ensure that research teams timely collect comprehensive, legible, accurate and complete data from eligible study participants
  • Ensure that all laboratory queries identified per quality control (QC) reports related to assigned study/studies are corrected accurately and promptly and faxed back to SCHARP
  • Ensure that periodic statistics generated by laboratory and clinic are accurate and reflect true trends being seen in the assigned study clinics
  • Review weekly sample reconciliation forms for accuracy and completeness

  • Assist with implementation of new study protocols, new instruments, new methodology and training as needed.
  • Assist in reviewing and monitoring the laboratory systems to assure data is being correctly released to the studies.

  • Supports and monitors laboratory safety programs
  • Ensures that the environment conditions of the laboratory are appropriate for testing and safe for the employees.

  • Demonstrates a cooperative attitude in relationships with colleagues and other personnel.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patients, patient results and project operations.
  • Serves as an effective representative to physicians, nurses, counsellors and visitors in a courteous and empathetic manner.
  • Meets or exceeds quality assurance levels of the laboratory and UNC Project collaboration.
  • Follows laboratory and collaboration polices.
  • Uses all facilities and supplies with care and in a cost – effective manner.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned by the Laboratory Director.

Qualification and Experience
  • Degree in Biomedical Sciences. Those with Master of Science in Biomedical Technology will have an added advantage.
  • Two years’ experience in a busy research laboratory


There will be practical interviews on motor cycle riding: successful will proceed to oral interviews.
