Job Description

Acute lack of adequately trained health care workers continues to be a persistent issue with the Malawian Health Sector. Human Resources for Health (HRH) issues are further compounded by the high burden disease within Malawi, most notably HIV/AIDS. Malawi was the first country to adopt the ambitious UNAIDS 90-90-90 test and treat targets in an effort to fight HIV/AIDS. However, the achievement of this goal has HRH implications, as it requires more health workers to ensure HIV testing, linkage to treatment, and other related services. In order for Malawi to achieve the goals and targets, its HRH capacity must improve, ensuring a workforce that is adequate and well-motivated to work.

Christian Health Association of Malawi with support from PEPFAR through CDC plans to recruit health workers who will be posted in selected PEPFAR priority sites in Zomba, Mangochi, Machinga, Chikwawa and Blantyre both in Government and CHAM facilities. CHAM will be recruiting Nurse Midwife Technicians, Clinical Technicians, Medical Assistants Laboratory Assistants and Pharmacy Assistants. Successful candidates will be on a one year’s contract. CHAM therefore invites applications for the following positions: -

Laboratory Assistant (Grade L)

Grade: L

Reporting to Facility in Charge

Duties and Responsibilities: -

  • Perform routine and specialized tests in assigned area of the laboratory; interpret tests results and correlate laboratory findings with disease state; confirm abnormal results and result discrepancies and initiate follow-up to resolve discrepancies.
  • Evaluate specimen adequacy for test performance.
  • Analyze technical problems pertaining to specimen adequacy, laboratory data, and instrumentation; determine cause and rectifies problems in accordance with guidelines and procedures.
  • Calibrate instruments; performs and documents preventative and corrective maintenance, function checks, and repairs on instruments and equipment.
  • Perform, evaluate, and document quality control data and assure that patient results are not reported when tolerance limits are exceeded; documents quality occurrences in compliance with the quality plan of the department;
  • Advises manager of significant quality control/quality assurance issues.
  • Perform testing on proficiency testing samples.
  • Perform instrumentation troubleshooting to correct problems; refer problems appropriately to instrument vendors.
  • Review, repeat, and verify laboratory results according to standard operating procedures; report critical (panic) values or unusual results in accordance with established policy.
  • Prepare reagents and solutions in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Participate in in-service education programs.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patients, families and staff.
  • Attend all laboratory meetings and be an active member in discussions to upgrade the laboratory, analysis, safety and team environment.
  • Know the procedure of obtaining emergency blood when required
  • Adhere to customer service standards of hospital and department.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
  • Report results accurately in health passports, inpatient records, afyapro computer system and laboratory records books.
  • Update laboratory data records for internal and external auditing
  • Regularly order and record usage of all consumable stock
  • Liaise with internal and external professional professionals, this includes but is not limited to all hospital staff, volunteers, equipment service engineers, Malawi Medical Council, MBT and other collaborating laboratory staff.

Qualifications and minimum requirements:
  • Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) and a Certificate in Medical Technology or other related certificate and certification as a Laboratory Assistant by a recognized Medical Institution recognized by Medical Council of Malawi or equivalent certification.
  • Able to sit, stand, walk, bend, reach beyond arm’s length, and type (finger dexterity) for extended periods of time


Salaries and benefits are within the Government Salary Scale.
