Job Description

Background:

The Information and Technology (IT) intern will be responsible for the maintenance of hardware, software and other systems. S/he may also participate in the development of new desktops, servers or applications. The intern will actively contribute to meaningful projects and work closely with a mentor and with senior leadership.

The IT intern will provide direct technical assistance and support to Wala staff for network, hardware and software issues. The ideal candidate should be able to do a wide range of installation and maintenance activities related to computers and other office electronic equipment. The IT intern will gain hands-on experience and training in many aspects of IT, while also gaining a good understanding of a local social enterprise.

Overall Tasks

  • Respond to user requests for service, troubleshoot problems and help develop solutions.
  • Support PC hardware components, desktop operating system software, and application software.
  • Perform minor repairs to equipment and arrange for other servicing needs.
  • Identify and report system issues to vendors. Monitor and test resolution of those issues sent to vendors.
  • Monitor antivirus software and updates and repair computers infected with spyware, adware and/or viruses.
  • Monitor backup systems and procedures to ensure data security.
  • Assist in maintaining inventory records and documentation for all the electronic equipment.
  • Contribute to Wala’s technical documentation and participate in policy, procedure, and standards development.
  • Consult with vendors, perform research and evaluate products to assist in the selection and purchase of equipment and installation or upgrade of systems.
  • Assist users in determining appropriate software solutions to meet needs.
  • Develop and provide user training for basic hardware and software use.
  • Perform any other reasonable and IT related tasks assigned from time-to-time.

Education
:

Applicants at the time of application must meet the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled currently in or have graduated recently with a university degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Management Information Systems or any related field from a recognized higher learning institution. If a candidate has not graduated a transcript of grades will be sufficient.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English.
  • Familiar with IT software and able and willing to acquire new skills where necessary.
  • Any IT related professional qualification will be an added advantage.

Over and above the technical competences, we are looking for a driven, long-term sighted individual who has an authentic interest in contributing to Malawi’s socio-economic development and is willing to grow within a multicultural, dynamic and innovative organisation.

The successful candidate will be expected to start work immediately and will be required to make a commitment to work 30-40 hours per week for twelve (12) months.
