Job Description

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international independent medical humanitarian organization working in partnership with the Ministry of Health and other actors in Blantyre and environs on cervical cancer project.

MSF-FRANCE is recruiting suitable candidate for the position of:

Position: IPD / OPD NURSE (Based in QECH)



General duties
  • Know, promote, implement and follow at all times the universal hygiene standards/ precautions, bio-hazard prevention and infection control, security rules and other protocols and procedures in the medical premises and ensure high standards of hygiene of his/her working environment .
  • Ensure appropriate and safe waste segregation between medical (soft waste / sharps and needles) and non-medical waste.
  • Know the procedure in case of accidental exposure to blood, and always keep managers informed on time.
  • Respecting medical secrets and confidentiality at all times.
  • Organizing and carrying out care and treatments according to medical prescriptions, and assisting during consultations, daily rounds and other medical procedures. Participating in health education of the patient (and family) when necessary.
  • Ensure patients are properly received and installed in the health service. Ensures that patients with lack of autonomy are assisted, especially regarding their feeding, personal hygiene, movements and comfort.
  • Ensure to have enough medical equipment sterilized.
  • Carry-out admission, surveillance and follow-up of patients meaning assessment of their health state evolution, and identification of emergency situation or any deterioration, and reporting important information to the medical team with appropriate urgency
  • Participate biomedical equipment control and maintenance (Glucometer, Hemocue, Dynamap, Oxygen concentrator, etc…), controlling the good functioning (including batteries load), ensuring appropriate storage conditions, regular cleaning, informing managers in case of repair need, inventory of equipment available in IPD and OPD, (at every team changeover, ensuring no material is taken out of nursing area/wards without prior authorization, etc.)
  • Ensuring the supply and storage of drugs and medical consumables in IPD pharmacies: monthly inventory and order, follow-up of expired drugs and organization of their return to central pharmacy, and refills of emergency trolley, keeping the IPD pharmacy clean and organized.
  • Carry-out and supervise administrative procedures and documents (fill in patients files, forms, consumptions, statistics, etc.), ensure an appropriate written/oral handover, and report any problematic situations and cases that may arise. Fill in all necessary registers and health files, participate in data collection and keep doctors/supervisors informed.
  • Respect medical secret and confidentiality
  • Remaining flexible, cooperating with multi-disciplinary team, and performing any other task needed to ensure quality of care, good organization of the ward, on request of the managers
  • Participate in health education of the patient in collaboration with patient support activity team and the medical team

Contract details

  • Fixed-term contract (4 Months –maternity replacement)
  • Intended starting date: Immediately

Skills & Qualifications
  • Specialty (nurse, midwife) diploma and experience in supervision is essential.
  • Experience in obstetrics and gynaecology and SRH desirable.
  • Minimum 2 Year experience in areas of Cervical Cancer related or reproductive health preferably.
  • Desirable working experience in MSF/MOH
  • Essential computer literacy (word, excel and internet)
  • Language; English and Chichewa
