Job Description

COMSIP Cooperative Union Limited is a member owned organization with a national footprint. It is a secondary cooperative, registered under the Cooperative Societies Act 1998. COMSIP works with rural and peri-urban community groups that are owned, managed and controlled by members themselves and its main thrust is building a culture of savings and investment among ordinary Malawians in a quest to improve livelihoods.

COMSIP is an implementing agency in the Malawi Social Support for Resilient Livelihoods Project (MSSRLP), a government of Malawi project supported by the World Bank.

With funding from the World Bank through the National Local Government Finance Committee (NLGFC) COMSIP therefore intends to use part of the funding to recruit suitably qualified, experienced, and result oriented project staff for the following posts to be based in Lilongwe and Mzuzu.

Position: Internal Audit Officer

The successful candidate shall report to the Risk, Compliance & Audit Specialist and will be expected to operate in a team environment whilst at the same time be assigned responsibility for specific assignments.


Main Duties and Responsibilities


  • Delivery from planning to completion of the programme of work set out by the Risk, Compliance & Audit Specialist as part of the continuous auditing element of the Internal Audit Plan
  • Updating the status of the previous internal and external audit findings on a quarterly basis, auditing resolved issues and preparing the quarterly status report for review by the Risk, Compliance & Audit Specialist
  • Conducting other audit work as directed by the Risk, Compliance & Audit Specialist in line with the Internal Audit Plan
  • Presentation of clear, concise and timely working papers in line with International Internal Auditing Standards for review by the Risk, Compliance & Audit Specialist
  • The timely delivery of professional written draft reports and practical value added recommendations on issues arising during audit work
  • Drive a policy of best practice with a focus on continuous improvement and awareness across COMSIP Union with respect to internal control, risk and corporate governance
  • Develop and maintain productive business relationships across all units in COMSIP Union
  • Perform special audit-related projects as assigned


Qualifications and Experience Required

  • Minimum Diploma in Auditing or Accounting, those with a Degree will have an added advantage
  • Membership to the Institute of Internal Auditors IIA) Malawi or Institute of Chartered Accountants in Malawi (ICAM)
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience for those with a Diploma in Auditing or Accounting and 3 years’ for experience for those with a Degree working in an audit environment preferably public sector
  • Knowledge in cooperative movement and working with poor rural people an added advantage
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills with an ability to work effectively at all levels
  • Ability to present adequate working papers to enable the Risk, Compliance & Audit Specialist to assess work done and matters to be reported
  • Act in a professional and ethical manner at all times including observing the confidential nature of Internal Audit’s work
  • Highly organised with strong organisation and planning skills, ability to prioritise tasks and deliver assigned audits in line with the audit plan
  • Excellent Computer skills
  • Adequate Knowledge and adherence to Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA)
