Médecins Sans Frontières, (MSF) is an international independent medical humanitarian organization working together with the Ministry of Health in Chiradzulu district on HIV program.

MSF-FRANCE is recruiting suitable candidates for the position of:

Position: HIV/TB Specialised Nurse

Position based in Chiradzulu

 

The HIV/TB specialized nurse will be on roster to perform consultation to HIV positive children and adolescents and unstable adult patients as defined in the unstable patient criteria in the health centre HIV clinics during intensive clinic days and Saturday Teen Clubs.

 

Accountabilities:

Perform consultation in the general HIV clinic

• Perform a proper history and examination, request investigations including VL, CD4, TB LAM, CrAg and ART drug sensitivity tests, review the results, make a diagnosis and manage the patient according to MSF protocols.
• Perform or request other point of care tests: Syphilis, Hepatitis B, Hemoglobin, creatinine, urine dipstick analysis, glycaemia when indicated, interpret the results and manage the patient accordingly in accordance with MSF protocols.
• Ensure that the results of the requested tests are communicated to the patient and recorded in the different databases (M+, Baobab)
• Identify patients who are in need of viral load and/or genotyping testing and participate in sample collection.
• Diagnose patients failing ART treatment and switch them to appropriate treatment without unnecessary delay.
• Identify patients who are in need of hospitalization based on a thorough clinical assessment and laboratory investigations, ensure that all necessary POC lab tests prior to hospitalization are done; all necessary adjustment/ changes to treatment are done prior to hospitalization and ensure that the patient is referred to the hospital without unnecessary delay.
• Refer patients in need for special attention and care to Counsellors, Midwife, Mental Health Nurses, Social Workers and to the Complex Case Management Team (CCMT). Ensure correct follow-up of these patients with the other health workers.
• Counsel and educate about contraception methods and STIs prevention. Provide contraceptive methods for patients in need.
• Participate in nutrition screening of HIV positive patients and ensure management according to management plan/protocol.
• Diagnose, treat and follow-up TB, STIs and other general pathologies in the HIV outpatient clinics when required
• Manage essential drug and supplies kit (order new drugs according to the daily consumption and in anticipation of upcoming consumption to avoid stock outs) and dispense drugs from the kit to patients when the drug is not available in MoH pharmacy.
• Document every consultation in M+ forms, patient health passport and mastercard, ensure that the M+ forms are properly filed after consultations to keep track of the patient’s clinical evolution and to ensure continuity of care for the patient.
• Participate in data collection and reporting when required.

 

Other roles

• Report to the activity manager any organizational problems, and contribute in solving the problems
• Report to and seek advice from the HIV/TB doctor regarding patients who need hospitalization or complex clinical management.
• Prepare case studies and reviews for clinical meetings
• Participate in updating training materials together with HIV doctor
• Collect and update daily-required data
• Use and integrate patient data into clinical practice with the aim to improve quality of care.
• Assists with any other duties as deemed necessary by the supervisor(s). 

Specific Accountabilities

• In cases of emergency, carrying out first aid care and treatment according to protocols in order to reduce mortality rates
• Knowing and implementing Patient Therapeutic Education (PTE), i.e. keeping contact with all patients, providing them information regarding their health state and responding to their questions.
• Knowing and promoting the proper application of Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) Kit and Sexually Gender Based Violence (SGBV) protocol.

 

Required Qualifications:

• Degreein nursing and registration with the Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi
• Diploma in HIV management is an advantage

 

Required experience:

• At least 2 years’ experience with clinical HIV/AIDS/TB care, including the provision of ART
• Previous experience in MSFor another health NGOin the field is an advantage

• Ability to speak and write in English and Chichewa

Contract Details:

• 12-months contract renewable, including three months’ probation period
• Intended start date: Beginning of December 2019
• Working hours: 07:30-16:30 Tuesday to Saturday, occasionally on Mondays and public holidays as flexibility is required. Schedule determined by management
