Job Description

St John Malawi is a non-profit organization with a dedicated team of volunteers working to deliver first aid and healthcare services to vulnerable members of the community Malawi. We provide commercial first aid services and deliver community health projects. St John seeks a new staff member to be part of the team in Blantyre.

Position: Head of Programme – St John Malawi



The Head of Programme (HoP) is responsible for the technical and leadership in programming and the timeliness of technical reporting. S/he will be accountable for all technical and programme delivery activities including implementation progress through monitoring, evaluation and learning and the production of internal and external technical reports.

 National Coordinator (NC)


Financial Management

  • Ensure the integrity of programme budgets and expenditures are up to date and recorded accurately;
  • Monitor project spending against agreed budgets to identify potential project under or over-spends
    and liaise with Senior Management Team (SMT) to ensure appropriate action;
  • Ensure adherence to SJM’s Finance Manual and the effective, transparent use of financial resources in compliance with SJM’s policies and procedures;
  • Support, guide and advise the programme team on internal control matters to ensure compliance with appropriate standards and procedures.
  • Ensure that projects are implemented in accordance with the budgets and project financial
    plans Budgets
  • Collaborate with the Finance team on the preparation of accurate quarterly forecasts;
  • Collaborate with the Finance and Administration Officer in the preparation of annual projects
    budgets for submission.


  • Review all technical information before submission to the NC and subsequent onward submission to external donors. This includes detailed review in accordance with month and year-end procedures;
  • Prepare donor reports in a timely manner, and ensure they are consistent with underlying budget
  • Prepare specific reports on any aspects of the project implementation as may be reasonably
    required by the Council.
  • Prepare reports on the performance of the individual members of staff entrusted to her/him
    for project implementation for the purposes of annual performance appraisal.

Staff Management

  • Develop a well performing and accountable programme team through technical support, coaching,
    mentorship and performance management;
  • Design and facilitate trainings for volunteers, programme staff and other service providers’ partners in the public sector


  • A minimum of Public Health Degree, with 5 years’ work experience;
  • Experience with managing donor funded programme/projects a MUST;
  • Good verbal communication, report writing and presentation skills in English;
  • Self-motivated and the ability to work with minimum supervision;
  • Ability to work with others and to maintain compatibility among staff and partners;
  • Working understanding of NGO operations and project cycle;
