PL FM and GD TV invite applications from suitably qualified and experienced candidates to fill the following challenging positions:

Position: HEAD OF NEWS AND CURRENT AFFAIRS

Duties and Key Responsibilities

• Formulating and giving direction and leadership to Desk editors, sub-editors and reporters as well as checking on work progress including the alignment of staff around a single, integrated, vision for the corporation and ensuring professional and smooth operation of the department.
• Providing editorial and creative leadership and inspiration to PL FM and GD TV News & Current Affairs to enhance the strength, depth and quality of its services.
• Developing and contributing to overall PL FM and GD TV policies, strategies and maintain the values of the PL FM and GD TV, as part of the senior leadership team playing an active role in the Executive Committee.
• Ensuring overall control and availability of news items and current affairs programmes by setting news and current affairs agenda in line with PL FM/GD TV policy.
• Ensuring that daily Editorial meetings are conducted and reporting to management on performance of reporters.
• Control the output of news and current affairs programmes by ensuring that the content of the news follows organizational policy and broadcasting regulations.
• Attending management meetings
• Vet news programs/items before broadcast
• Ensuring maximum efficiency that maximizes the effective use of available resources (Both financial and human) and accountability.
• Conducting periodic meetings and assessment of departmental staff to evaluate performance and productivity.
• Creating an environment which attracts the most creative and diverse staff, encouraging individuals and teams to create their best work.
• Being accountable for News & Current Affairs performance against the PL FM and GD TV’s strategic objectives and metrics as set out in the PL FM and GD TV’s Strategic Plan and regulatory requirements.
• Navigating both internal and external challenges in order to remain relevant to audiences in an ever changing environment, while delivering efficiency savings.
• Ensuring the effective management of risk, including editorial standards and Health and Safety. Ensure there are robust, documented business continuity and risk management processes in place.
• Strategic thinking with the ability to identify a long term vision and analyse ideas and information, ensuring effective, informed decision making.

Experience, Skills and Attributes

• Applicants must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism and Mass Communication. Those with a Masters Degree in Mass Communication shall be added advantage.
• At least 3-5 years of experience in heading News and Current Affairs Department in respect to Radio and Television Broadcasting.
• Skills in broadcast news and current affairs evaluation.
• Skills in both verbal and written communication.
