Pakachere Institute of Health and Development Communication is one of the leading local health and development communication NGO in Malawi. Pakachere exists to empower Malawians, particularly the vulnerable, to choose and sustain healthy behaviors, through service delivery, evidence-based health and development communication, community mobilization, advocacy and networking. Working hours:             40 hours

Contract:                      Full time, 1 year contract - renewable

Location: Thyolo  

Purpose of
the Job

Based in Thyolo, the Field Officer (FO) will be responsible for delivery of different AGYW project activities. Specifically, the FO will be responsible for ensuring that AGYW in their allocated catchment areas are reached with a defined package of HIV prevention services and that they access HIV testing including receiving their results. S/he will ensure that in-school youth are reached with comprehensive sexuality education/or life skills education through school lessons.    

The incumbent will be the focal person for the project in the designated Traditional Authorities where he will be working from. S/he will directly work with targeted communities in Thyolo district to facilitate the identification, establishment, running of in-school and out-of-school girl clubs, teen clubs and other structures for mobilising and accessing AGYW. Other activities to be implemented will be in line with the approved AGYW annual work plan.



Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate establishment and/or strengthening of in-school and out-of-school AGYW clubs and structures in the communities;
  • Support linkage of HIV positive AGYW to teen clubs and psychosocial support services;
  • Develop weekly work plans to guide provision of a defined package of services including HIV prevention, YFHS, and SGBV among AGYW and boys;
  • Mobilise and work with community structures and members to support mobilisation of AGYW to participate in project activities as well as being involved in AGYW clubs;
  • In liaison with the Project Manager, work with the district health office to plan delivery of HIV prevention and SRHR services to mobilised AGYW through mobile outreach clinics;
  • Establish and maintain rapid response committees for cases of GBV for AGYWs;
  • Provide on-going support and mentorship to Peer Educators and AGYW ambassadors for effective mobilisation of AGYW;
  • In liaison with Community Mobilization Officer, strengthen demand creation and empowerment sessions on sexual consent, addressing gender norms and attitudes, and addressing autonomy in decision-making;
  • Ensure quality data collection by use of correct data collection tools, (using data checklist form)
  • Ensure that data collection forms are well filled;
  • Co-facilitate community-based workshops and dialogues with youth facilitators
  • Facilitate community engagement processes. Coordinate and collaborate with the community structures such as VHCs, Traditional and religious leaders, ADCs etc.


Qualification and Requirements

  • Degree/diploma in community nursing or Social Science or Rural/Community Development, social work and welfare, HIV/AIDS management and psychosocial support or other relevant qualifications;
  • Experience in mobilizing young people (especially girls) community members, community leaders and young people to participate in programs;
  • Experience in facilitating rural health development projects including Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH), AGYW interventions, HIV and AIDS, Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Initiatives;
  • Experience in monitoring and development of weekly work-plans;
  • Excellent written and oral communication in English
  • Experience and good facilitation skill especially in HIV prevention, sexual and reproductive health
  • Experience in riding a motorcycle with Valid Driver’s License;
  • Knowledge of computer use, particularly MS word and excel;

  • Ability to work and be stationed within rural communities;
  • Be creative and innovative;
  • Demonstrated experience working with adolescent girls, boys and young women;
  • Demonstrated ability mobilising and working with community level structures;
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision;
  • Demonstrated experience in oral and written communication as well as ability to use recent social media technology
