GOAL has been working in southern Malawi since 2002 and currently has a presence in four districts (Nsanje, Chikwawa, Machinga and Blantyre). GOAL’s global objective is to promote resilient well-being by: helping people to survive crisis; promoting optimal and resilient health; promoting food and nutrition security, and; supporting people to have sustainable livelihoods. GOAL maintains close working relationships with district authorities and relevant line ministries.

General Description of the Role

The Field Manager will support projects focused on resilience building at field level. The Manager will be responsible for overall project management at district level and ensuring that project objectives are on track, which will require him/her to work constructively with colleagues across his/her team within and beyond Chikwawa district .The Manager will provide technical direction to project staff and partners in the areas of livelihoods, according to the projects’ activities, and provide recommendation for improvements. In addition, the Manager will, on an on-going basis, assess current livelihoods needs and assist in program development to secure funding for new projects from a range of donors. This position requires an individual who is accustomed to the pace of development programming but also some level of experience in emergency response, does not require close supervision or direction, and is flexible and highly responsive.


Program Management

  • Strategic direction and overall supervision and successful implementation of the project(s)
  • Development of work plans and budget management according to project outputs and results
  • Manage teams of field staff to complete program goals on time and on budget
  • Evaluate activity progress and determine necessary actions to course correct
  • Provide program reports that are timely and meet institutional and donor requirements.
  • Represent GOAL at livelihoods sector and other related technical working groups and other stakeholder or coordination meetings, as needed, and maintain a positive, continuous and visible presence for GOAL
  • Develop and maintain strategic relationships with local partners and local authorities
  • Facilitate donor visits to project sites as appropriate
  • Work constructively with support teams to ensure sound administrative practices with regards to record keeping, compliance with donor regulations, communications, etc.
  • Frequent travel when required to attend project meetings and provide support to team as needed

Technical Direction

  • Review plans for delivery of project services and provide guidance to field staff and/or to improve planning, management and delivery.
  • Work with MEAL teams to analyze program databases and advise on how things can be improved where applicable.
  • Propose and implement capacity building activities aimed at enhancing skills of field staff in delivery of resilience building activities.

Program Development

  • Stay up to date with all district-specific response plans by sectors and other organizations implementing similar actions.
  • Assist program coordinator in provide technical input, writing and budgetary input for new program design.
  • Interface with key donors regarding resilience building programs


This position demands a dynamic individual with a demonstrated ability to achieve results in a demanding and fast paced environment.

  • Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, Rural development, or related field in addition to experience managing projects at field level
  • Minimum of 3 years professional experience leading, managing, and implementing development programs, preferably resilience building
  • Demonstrated background and contacts with UN agencies and other development actors
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, public speaking, and strategic planning skills required.
  • Strong English writing skills required.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and tasks efficiently.
  • Excellent time management skills and resourcefulness with strong attention to detail.
