Job Description

Background 

United Purpose (UP) Malawi is an international non-governmental organisation working to create opportunities for lasting improvement in peoples’ lives. We work in partnership with others to support a range of livelihoods and food security, WASH and health, sustainable energy and gender equality programmes reaching over 1,000,000 people a year across Malawi.  Globally, we work in nine countries across Africa, Asia and South America, however our Malawi programme is by far and away our largest and most established country programme. UP currently operates in 17 districts in Malawi, supporting over 30 ongoing projects, with a total staff of over 250. 

UP Malawi is seeking to recruit a talented and dynamic District Manager, National MEAL Coordinator, District MEAL  Coordinator and Field Facilitator for our FCDO-funded large-scale resilience building programme, Promoting Sustainable  Partnerships for Empowered Resilience (PROSPER), the National MEAL Coordinator is based in Lilongwe while the rest of the  positions are based in Balaka. PROSPER is implemented jointly by a consortium of UN agencies, international NGOs (Concern Worldwide, GOAL, United Purpose), market systems experts (Kadale Consulting) and the largest rural finance services institution in Malawi (CUMO Microfinance Limited). This innovative and transformative programme aims to fundamentally disrupt and break the recurring cycle of hunger in Malawi. Overall the PROSPER programme targets over 1 million people in Balaka, Chikwawa, Mangochi, and Phalombe districts and aims at reducing the impact of climate shocks, responding to seasonal consumption needs, supporting the design of social safety nets, and generating evidence and knowledge to inform government policy.  

UP Malawi is primarily supporting the implementation in Balaka and Mangochi districts together with the other consortium partners and stakeholders, as part of the Concern Worldwide-led consortium. The applicants must be firmly committed to delivering lasting positive improvements to the communities that we serve, and delivering UP’s mission and upholding our values of integrity, dignity, and environmental respect. The contract will be until approximately April 2022 (with strong possibility of future extension to March 2023, subject to personal performance and funding). 



Position: Field Facilitator (1 position, based in Balaka)


Job Purpose:

The Field Facilitators will be responsible for ensuring that all project activities are properly planned and facilitated at community and household level in line with the project approach and principles. Reports to Food Security and Business Development Coordinator, no line reports. 


Key duties and responsibilities: 

  • Identification and sensitisation of relevant district, area and community based authorities and leaders. ∙ Identify and verify, in conjunction with the project team, partners, beneficiaries to participate in the programme.
  • Work with communities to vision, design, prioritise and implement project initiatives, innovations and collective actions, through coordinating and liaising with other stakeholders. 
  • Provide timely and appropriate support with regard to individual, household and community resilience building activities, natural resource management, and building social and business networks. 
  • Ensure that all project interventions are carried out with full participation of the community and other stakeholders ∙ Facilitate effective collaboration with other key development partners in the district to promote synergy and ensure best use of available resources for development activities within the district 
  • Develop partnership with grass root level stakeholders for the sustainability of programmes
  • Carry out assessments and monitoring activities, as well as data collection 
  • Report regularly and accurately to their line manager 
  • Support the integration of women’s empowerment and leadership; accountability; and UP mainstreaming issues (HIV/AIDs, disability, etc) throughout all aspects of the project cycle. 


The successful candidate will have: 

  • Minimum of a Higher Diploma, Degree preferred, in the field of agriculture/ agronomy/ community development and/or social work 
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience, related to rural livelihoods activities, facilitation and reporting with a good understanding of participatory tools, gender, HIV and AIDS, environment, capacity building and human rights issues.
  • Convincing and engaging training and mobilisation skills, in a participatory manner 
  • Proactive and highly motivated individual who requires the minimum of supervision 
  • Fluency in spoken and written English, Chichewa and Yao 
  • Strong respect and empathy for rural communities; a deep personal commitment to promoting women’s rights; as well as an affinity to UP’s mission and values of human respect, partnership and integrity 
  • Valid Malawian motorcycle driving license and willingness to travel to the field on a motorbike.
