Job Description

Background

UMODZI Consulting is a Malawian led professional team of consultants with cooperating international partners that provides market-led business development services (BDS) to corporate clients, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Malawi and within the SADC region.

UMODZI Consulting has been working with United States African Development Foundation (USADF) in Malawi since 2019, to support the implementation of the USADF funded enterprises. With funding from USADF, UMODZI Consulting will be implementing a Livelihood Improvement Program in Neno District. The program will set up community owned integrated farming system demonstration units in communities around 14 health facilities that are part of “Partners in Health” (PIN) Package of Essential Noncommunicable Disease Interventions (PEN) Plus network of clinics within Neno District. UMODZI Consulting is inviting applications from suitably qualified persons to fill various positions as follows:

POSITION: Extension Officer 





Reports to: Project Coordinator


Purpose of the position

The Extension Officer shall work closely with Lead farmers assigned to the 14 health facilities and the farmer groups in the delivery of agriculture extension services. The Extension Officer shall further work closely with Agronomists in the establishment of demonstrations farms for farm trials on new agronomic techniques. The work of the Extension Officer shall centre on developing the capacity of farmers to adopt and implement better and innovative farming practices through exposure to new knowledge, information, skills, inputs and processes to improve the long-term performance of their farming for improved nutrition and income.


Main duties and responsibilities


• Mobilize project beneficiaries into groups and support them to become functional organizations and get registered
• Train and support project beneficiaries in group dynamics, irrigation and basic business management.
• Support, facilitate interface meetings between project beneficiaries and other stakeholders at local level.
• Train farmers in postharvest handling and quality management through support in grading, packaging and storage and selling of farmer aggregated produce,
• Support the Identification of place to construct storage facilities and ensure in-store quality management.
• To work with the Lead Farmers to facilitate, train, coach and mentor farmers in modern farming.
• To impact knowledge to the farmer using demonstration plots which will be set up in each of the 14 health facilities
• To monitor and assist in collecting data from both demonstration farms and farmer’s farms in the area of operations.
• To work closely with the Agronomists to enhance adaptation and implement of appropriate agriculture and climate change techniques for farmers
• Identify performance gaps and training needs of the project beneficiaries
• Ensure timely submission and accuracy of the following reports:
• Monthly field reports
• Monthly workplans
• Farmer group periodic reports (one for each trained/supervised).
• Training reports
• Perform any other duties as delegated by the Project coordinator


Desirable skills


• Strong farmer facilitation skills
• Excellent team player and motivator
• Licensed to ride a Motor bike
• Interest in rural or community development work


Knowledge


• Experience in community mobilization
• Experience in working with farmer groups
• Knowledge of challenges farmers are facing in Malawi
• Understanding of agronomic practices for key crops in Malawi
• Understanding of animal husbandry


Abilities


• Effective communication both oral and written English
• Ability to produce good reports
• Good report writing skills in the English

Minimum qualifications


• Diploma in Agri-business, Agriculture, Rural or Community Development, or related disciples with minimum of 3 years work experience
• Proficiency in Chichewa
• Experience as a Trainers of Trainers an advantage
• Experience working with community based extension workers
