Co-ordination Union for the Rehabilitation of the Environment (CURE) was established in 1994 as a membership driven network to provide technical support and improve networking amongst NGOs, the Government of Malawi, Donors and other organizations or individuals working in the area of Environment. The CURE’s mission is to assist NGOs enhance the impact. gender equity and sustainability of community based natural resource management interventions through capacity building, coordination, information exchange and advocacy. CURE is a recognized and credible apex NGO for environmental issues and initiatives in Malawi. To this end CURE seeks to improve coordination. planning, implementation and the overall management of environmental activities at the national, district and community level amongst primarily NGOs, but also through consultations with government and development partners.

The Executive Director is a performance-based leadership position and the incumbent is responsible for the strategic management of CURE. With this position, we are looking for someone who can help steering CURE, with a focus formulating and implementing strategy and policy and managing the day-to-day operations of CURE in a manner that will revamp and grow the Network to achieve its mandate and strategic objectives. The incumbent will also be responsible for ensuring that CURE develops into a financially viable entity. He/she will report to the Governing Council through the Board Chair.

Key Result Areas:

  • Coordinate programs and activities associated with the management of CURE;
  • Promote collaboration and cooperation between CURE members and stakeholders and ensure that their interests, aims and expectations are embraced in the decision-making processes;
  • Grow CURE’s supporter base by increasing number of members, sponsors, donors. campaigners and volunteers;
  • Develop and implement strategies that will ensure the long-term sustainability of CURE and enable communities to realize pragmatic returns from interventions;
  • Undertake resource mobilization of CURE strategic resources required to support the core work of the network;
  • Establish nurture and deepen relationships and partnerships with various stakeholders including national and regional agencies, multilateral and bilateral development partners, government agencies and non-governmental organizations;
  • Develop strategies and programs for staff development, strengthening the capacity of CURE members and local communities through training, mentoring and coaching;
  • Manage, design and implement technical and organizational capacity building activities targeted at increasing the capacity of NGOs in environment sector;
  • Facilitate interface meetings with government to put forward pertinent issues and find Joint solutions on environmental problems and challenges

Duties and Responsibilities;

  • Development and overall management of CURE’s staff and financial resources; a Supervision and evaluation of CURE’s programmes and staff:
  • Liaise with other NGOs. Donors and government ministries/departments on environmental and NRM issues;
  • Develop long-term strategic plans for CURE of programme proposals;
  • Preparation and presentation of programme proposals.
  • Timely submission of progress reports to CURE’S Governing Council and Donors;
  • Represent CURE at required meetings;
  • Undertake advocacy responsibilities;
  • Engage with the media to highlight best practices, critical gaps and needs in environment;
  • Ensure a good flow of information within the network;
  • Facilitate periodic meetings of NGO platforms on environment;
  • Undertake mapping of NGOs working on environment;
  • Establish mechanism for sharing of knowledge products.

Required Skills, Competencies and Qualifications;

  • Extensive knowledge of environment sector and national, regional and global issues, programmes, policies and frameworks.
  • Experience in managing diverse stakeholders including NGOs, government institutions, academia. media, development partners. local communities and the private sector;
  • Ability to negotiate, coordinate, network, advocate and influence policy;
  • Able to demonstrate passion and love for environment;
  • Experience in budget research and analysis;
  • Experience working in the NGO sector;
  • A University degree in Environmental Sciences, Social Sciences or any other relevant discipline;
  • At least 5 years of experience working in the environmental sector or related field in a reputable institution.
