Job Description

Find Your Feet (FYF) is a local NGO dedicated to working with poor, rural communities to create lasting solutions to poverty. FYF envisions a world in which everyone has the right to build a future free from hunger and poverty and its mission is to mobilise local knowledge and skills, and promote the ownership and use of natural resources by poor rural communities in finding sustainable solutions to hunger, poverty and discrimination.

FYF implements development projects with support from a wide range of donors including the World Food Programme (WFP); The Royal Norwegian Embassy and NORAD through the Development Fund of Norway; USAID through Pact Malawi; Kindernothilfe, Plan International Malawi; UK Foundations and Trusts and many others across all the regions of Malawi. Find Your Feet is now seeking a well-qualified and experienced person to fill the following position that will be based at its Head Office in Mzuzu.

Position Title: Executive Director

Office Location: Mzuzu

Reporting to: The Board of Trustees

Working with a strong local team, the Executive Director will be responsible for overseeing the administration, programmes, fundraising, marketing, community outreach and providing strategic direction for the Malawi Country Programme.

Specific Roles and Responsibilities

Working with a strong local team, the Executive Director (ED) will provide strategic direction for the Malawi Country Programme. He/she will ensure that all issues are dealt with appropriately and that a good working atmosphere across the programme is maintained as well as ensuring that financial and administrative systems are effective. He/she will be expected to be proactive in identifying bottlenecks and problems and deal with them decisively such that you maintain our programmatic, legal and financial integrity of FYF.

Organisational Development

  • The ED will develop and implement FYF’s vision, mission, philosophy and principles in line with agreed strategies, principles and organizational priorities and ensure that there is a strategic fit between Find Your Feets organizational strategy and its structure.

Communication and Representation

  • The ED will be expected to inspire, reassure and persuade a variety of stakeholders, ranging from partner organisations to senior government officials. He/she will be able to talk equally to farmers and ministers and will be comfortable in challenging injustice.

Fundraising and Finance

  • The Executive Director will oversee in-country fundraising. To do this, he/she will be able to articulate our vision clearly and inspire donors, partners and others to support our work. This role is increasing as in country fundraising becomes increasingly important. The converse is equally important. So in addition to fundraising, he/she will have oversight for the entire Malawi budget which is growing rapidly and for which, we are accountable to our donors. He/she will be responsible for fiscal management that generally anticipates operating within the approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position.

Human Resource Management

  • The ED will maintain effective and appropriate staff recruitment, induction, appraisal, remuneration and development practices at all levels to ensure the optimum utilisation and development of our human resources.
  • You will develop and manage all programme staff. At the same time, he/she will take care to promote a gender balance in the organisation and ensure that appropriate investments are made in staff development.

Policy, Research and Advocacy

  • The ED will be working with our partner organisations to drive forward and develop national and sometimes regional activities that mobilise the energy and influence of Malawian civil society to the greatest possible effect. This will involve advising on strategy, proposing tactics and supporting an eclectic range of activities. He/she should have a strong appreciation on use of media, lobbying and mass mobilisation.

Media Contacts

  • He/she will develop and manage a sound relationship with all sections of the media and ensure that any published material accurately reflects the views of the organization. He/she will promote an appropriate public image for Find Your Feet that is in keeping with its values and culture.


  • The Executive Director will work with the Board in order to fulfill the organizations mission. He/she will be responsible for leading FYF in a manner that supports and guides the organizations mission as defined by the Board of Directors. He will be responsible for communicating effectively with the Board and providing in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions.


  • He/she will be expected to undertake any other reasonable duties as assigned at the discretion of the Board of Trustees.

Qualifications & Required Skills

  • Post-graduate Degree in Development Studies or any other related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years experience in the management of development programmes with demonstrated senior management expertise, including a proven ability to develop the capacities of multi-disciplinary professional teams. This should include the ability to instil trust and confidence in partner organizations and colleagues from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Sound and up to date knowledge of development concepts, methodologies and techniques and the ability to critique them.
  • A strong understanding and commitment to the aims, objectives and values of Find Your Feet.
  • Ability to properly manage complex financial control and management systems.
  • Demonstrated expertise in strategic and long term planning and a proven ability to analyse complex political issues and to define sophisticated strategies for achieving social and policy change. This includes the ability to ensure that operational plans and activities meet short, medium and longer term targets.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to cultivate high-level contacts within governments, the media and civil society as well as the ability to handle sensitive diplomatic and Government level negotiations on matters affecting Find Your Feets Malawi Country Programme.
  • Sound awareness of the political, social, economic and historical context in which Find Your Feet operates in Malawi.
  • A self-starter with high levels of motivation, enthusiasm and drive.
  • The ability and resilience to cope with multiple internal and external demands together with proven experience in managing change in complex environments.
  • Fundraising experience.
  • Experience in establishing and or maintaining networks
  • Fluent written and spoken English.
