Job Description

Management International’s Client, The Christian Health Association of Malawi (CHAM) is an ecumenical umbrella association co-owned by Episcopal Conference of Malawi and Malawi Council of Churches. CHAM is the second largest provider of health services in Malawi. It has 190 Health Facilities and Training Colleges, which are located in all parts of the country. These are situated in remote and hard to reach areas. The objectives of CHAM are to facilitate, provide technical support, and develop health services among all its member facilities in order to achieve equity in access to health care, patient care and in all matters, to act for the benefit of the people of Malawi. CHAM seeks to engage the services of a highly motivated, pragmatic, competent and dynamic individual with the right skills mix to the vacant position of EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR.


Reporting to the Board, the incumbent of the position is expected to provide overall leadership and management of CHAM Secretariat ensure effective linkages with CHAM’s key stakeholders and guarantee successful coordination among all its member facilities.

The successful candidate will have the following key roles and responsibilities.

  • Providing overall strategic and operative management of CHAM Secretariat;
  • Leading in resource mobilisation for CHAM Secretariat and member facilities;
  • Promoting stronger partnerships and networking within and outside of the Health sector, Government of Malawi, local and overseas partners;
  • Maintaining donor liaisons and facilitating promotion of public private partnerships as well as private partnerships with CHAM;
  • Facilitating the formulation and execution of policies of CHAM in line with the core values of the organisation and Christian values;
  • Ensuring that procedures and internal controls and systems within CHAM are set and adhered to;
  • Serving as a link between the Board and staff in CHAM; and
  • Monitoring health standards through health related training, curriculum development, whilst influencing policy making and liaising with government and other non-governmental organisations involved in human resource for Health worker training in Malawi and outside.


The ideal candidate is expected to have the following qualifications, experiences, competences and attributes:

Educational Qualifications

A minimum of a Master’s Degree from a recognized University in the following areas:
  • Health
  • Business administration
  • finance
  • Economics


A minimum of ten years’ of progressive professional experience, plus 8 years’ experience in a senior management position in the following areas:
  • Health Sector Management
  • Project Management
  • Financial Management

In addition, the ideal candidate is expected to have a demonstrable outstanding record of accomplishment in mobilising funds from donor agencies, governments, and multilateral organizations and in managing multi-country projects with a wide range of stakeholders from varied cultural settings. Previous experience especially in management of local Faith based NGOs and or Private and Not for Profit organisations will be an added advantage.

  • Communication and Negotiation: Excellent, clear and open communication and demonstrable negotiation skills.
  • Networking and Partnership: Ability to network, relationship building and promote partnerships that will work to the benefit of CHAM.
  • Financial Management and Resource Mobilisation: Ability to mobilize, manage and account for donor resources and ensure internal controls are adhered to in order to minimize risk. Ability to work under pressure: Must be well organized and able to prioritize multiple tasks while achieving results.
  • Christian Health Care Delivery System: Understanding of the Christian Health Care Delivery System.
  • Project Management and Ecumenical Systems: Ability to gain thorough understanding of complex projects within complex ecumenical systems whilst having a bigger picture and seeing strategies through to implementation.
  • Practical Guidance and Media: Ability to translate health technical information into practical guidance and tools and effectively communicate these using print, electronic and presentation to media and CHAM members.
  • Lobbying and Advocacy: Demonstrated lobbying, advocacy, and facilitation skills.
  • Information Technology: Strong IT skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other programs like SPSS, HMIS, EPi info, and general computer knowledge.


An attractive remuneration package will be offered to the successful candidate, who will be appointed on a fixed 3 years performance related contract.
