Job Description

UNC Project, a biomedical research project based in Lilongwe, invites applications from suitably qualified individuals to fill the position of:


(Station Work: Lilongwe Rural- 7 positions, Mchinji 1 position, Ntchisi 2 positions)


Reporting to the District Supervisor, the Evaluation Assistant is responsible for properly engaging health facility personnel, village chiefs, their clerks and general community members to ensure their participation in the project. The Evaluation Assistant is also responsible for collecting complete, accurate and timely mortality surveillance data.


The Evaluation Assistant will be based in his or her assigned cluster located in a rural area.

Among other duties, the Evaluation Assistant will perform the following:

  • Work in partnership with stakeholders to properly identify and train volunteers for the project (Village Reporters).
  • Visit village chiefs and their clerks (5 to 15 chiefs per day) and health facilities to ensure that death registration forms and registers are being appropriately completed.
  • Using electronic data capturing devices, collect complete and accurate under-five mortality data from all gazetted chiefs and health facilities located in evaluation clusters.
  • Obtain informed consent from evaluation participants and administer Verbal Autospy questionnaire to them, in accordance with evaluation procedures.
  • Identify and resolve barriers to quality data collection.
  • In collaboration with district National Registration Bureau office, ensure availability of adequate mortality surveillance supplies at health facilities and homes of village headmen.
  • In collaboration with village reporters, chiefs, their clerks and facility personnel, resolve queries provided by data team and other evaluation officers within 48 hours.
  • Organize and conduct quarterly cluster-level review meetings with Village Reporters.
  • Prepare monthly and other reports.
  • Perform other assigned duties to ensure smooth running of evaluation activities.


  • Diploma in social science (social work, community development) or nursing from a recognized institution.
  • Minimum of 3 years research or development experience, in a busy setting, preferably in community engagement and data collection.
  • Computer literate with experience in utilizing electronic data capturing devices.
  • A clean motorcycle riding license with at least 2 years of motorcycle riding experience.
  • Ability to cultivate and maintain good relationships with participants, colleagues and partners.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.


There will be practical interviews on motor cycle riding: successful will proceed to oral interviews.
