Job Description

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates to fill the following position tenable at College of Medicine, a constituent of the University of Malawi (UNIMA).

Position: Estates and Development Officer

Job Summary

Reporting to the College Principal, the Estates and Development Officer will act as a key player in the construction and maintenance works at the College. The successful candidate will be expected to provide sound technical guidance as well as being involved as an expert in all construction matters. He/she will be offered an employment contract in line with University of Malawi terms and conditions.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Among other things, the Estates and Development Officer will be expected to perform the followings tasks:
  • Providing strategic leadership and management of the Estates and Development function at the College
  • Planning, implementing and monitoring Estates and Development activities; Providing technical support to line managers and users
  • Prepare tender and contract documents, including bills of quantities
  • Undertake cost analysis for construction projects, including repairs and maintenance work
  • Evaluate tenders from contractors and subcontractors
  • Prepare cost plans to enable design teams to produce practical designs for construction projects
  • Perform risk analysis, undertake value management and introduce cost control measures
  • Value completed works and facilitate payments
  • Maintain an updated record of construction projects and contracts
  • Supervise and mentor junior staff
  • Facilitate trainings on health and safety
  • Produce necessary reports


  • Bachelor’s degree in Quantity Surveying or related field. Those with postgraduate qualifications will have an added advantage.
  • 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Registration and in good standing with regulatory bodies.
