Project background  

Christian Aid, in partnership with Oxfam, is implementing a 3-year Gender Responsive Ultra-Poor Graduation project through the Government of Malawi’s Financial Access for Rural Markets, Smallholders and Enterprise (FARMSE) programme. The project is working to enhance resilience and sustainably graduate 3 300 households, including at least 30% women headed households and 20 % youth headed households in Balaka and Machinga districts. Christian Aid is implementing through on downstream partner, Churches Action in Relief and Development whilst Oxfam is implementing in Balaka through Eagles Relief and Development. This 3-year project started in July 2019 and it will phase out in July 2022.


Research Assistants will work in the field under the guidance and supervision of the M&E Officer and they will be reporting directly to the M&E Officer. Christian Aid reserves the right to revise the scope of work of the Research Assistant.



 Honesty: Shows a high level of integrity and will not fabricate responses or misrepresent the programme.

Communication: Confidently expresses self, able to clearly ask questions and help the respondent understand what is needed from her/him.

Relationship Builder: Able to build trust with people at the rural level and maintain confidentiality.

Cultural Awareness: Must be aware of and sensitive to the cultural expectations of communities in Balaka and Machinga districts.

Accuracy: Must be able to interpret and record responses appropriately without distorting the respondent’s meaning or confusing the reader.

Endurance: Must be able to work for full day working hours in the field across a number of days.


Research Assistants should have;

  • A degree/diploma in Community development, Statistics, Economics, Agriculture or the Social Sciences.
  • Experience in data collection, administering questionnaires and conducting interviews, data collection and data entry.
  • Willingness to learn and explore new experiences.
  • Fluency in speaking and understanding Chichewa, and English.
