Job Description

The Agricultural Research and Extension Trust (ARET) is Malawi’s premier institution in tobacco research. extension and training services Established in 1995 and funded primarily by tobacco growers, ARET’s core activities include development and dissemination of tobacco technologies and training of tobacco stakeholders in order to sustain and improve agricultural productivity while conserving the natural resources.

An opportunity has arisen for professionals with requisite academic qualifications, technical expertise, leadership acumen and managerial experience to take up the position of Director of Technical Services.


Purpose of the position

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Director – Technical Services will provide technical Section on business decisions and execution of specific projects for the Trust.

Job Description

Position: Director of Technical Services

Grade: M2

Department Location : Administration, Kandiya

Reports to: The Chief Executive Officer


To provide strategic leadership and direction over research, extension, training and diversification functions for the Trust

Core Functions

  • Strategic leadership
  • Deputize the Chief Executive Officer and supervise Heads of Sections.
  • Develop, implement and manage strategic goals, policies, procedures, and procedures and plans for the Technical Services Directorate.
  • Provide advisory services to the Technical Committee of the Board regarding oil aspects falling within the technical services of the Trust.
  • Provide secretarial services to the Technical Committee of the Board.
  • Participate in the Strategic Plan development and implementation of the Trust’s Strategic Plan.
  • ;Coordinate and consolidate workplans of operations and operational budgets for technical departments/sections.
  • Conduct monitoring and evaluation for research, extension and training programmes.
  • Coordinate the production of ARET publications and Annual Technical Reports.


  • Liaise with the Agricultural Technologies Clearing Committee (ATCC) on research technologies generated by the Trust.
  • Develop and manage a database of all technologies generated by the Trust and ensure they are patented.
  • Develop collaborative links between ARET and other research institutions both within and outside the country


  • Lead in the formulation and review of extension methodologies.
  • Identify training needs and develop training plans for extension and specialist staff
  • Collaborate with other institutions, delivering extension both within and outside the country.
  • Take lead in curriculum development and review
  • Take lead in putting in place measures that ensure self sustainability of MWICA.
  • Collaborate with other similar academic institutions both within and outside the country.

Qualification and Experience

  • A minimum of Master’s Degree in Crop Sciences or Crops Related Disciplines. A PhD Degree in Crop Sciences or Crops Related Disciplines or Masters or Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Economics or Management Related Discipline will be an added advantage.
  • At least (Ten) 10 years’ work experience in a senior management position coordinating Agricultural Research, Extension and Training Programmes
  • Experience in developing and implementing a curriculum for an agriculture institution.
